Pepsi Coliseum Weekend to Feature Torrid Twosome
December 2, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Indianapolis Ice News Release
CONFERENCE SHOWDOWN: The two hottest teams in the Northern Conference will be in action this weekend at the Pepsi Coliseum when the Ice hosts the Tulsa Oilers on Friday and Saturday night. Indy, who is 6-0-3 in its last nine games and last nine home games, is coming off two impressive victories this past weekend over last year's CHL Champion, the Memphis RiverKings. Tulsa, who are 8-2-0 on the road this season, have exploded out of the gates with an 18-2-0 record and a 9-1-0 mark in their last ten games. In the two meetings this year, both games have been tightly-contested with the Oilers earning a pair of wins in the shootout.
SILVER IS GOLDEN: "Stay Golden Pony Boy" is the line that Johnny told to Pony Boy in the movie, The Outsiders, and it is the perfect phrase to describe the play of goaltender Shawn Silver. Silver, who is 6-0-2 in his last eight outings, is arguably the hottest goaltender in the CHL as of late as he is coming off another sweltering weekend as he went 2-0-0 with an 0.50 goals-against-average, one shutout and a .983 save percentage (58/59) in two wins over division rival, Memphis. The excellent glovework dropped his GAA from 1.94 to 1.68 (second in CHL) and rose his save percentage from .930 to .940 (tied-second in CHL) from a week ago. This weekend's match-up pits the Ice's Silver against the other premier goaltender in the East, Tulsa's Rod Branch, who is undefeated this year at 16-0-0 to go along with a 1.99 GAA, six shutouts and a .940 save percentage.
ICE GRIDDLE: Bernie John has a six-game point streak (2G, 6A) and is just three points shy of 500 for his pro career...Kevin St. Jacques has 12 points (6G, 6A) in his last nine games...Scott Lewis has three points (2G, 1A) in his last three games....Bryce Classen has five points (2G, 3A) in his last five games...Randy Holmes, who notched his 450th point of his pro career last week, has three points (1G, 2A) in his last two games and five of his seven points this year have come against Memphis...Jason Baird has three helpers in his last two games...Ryan Aikia has six assists in his last six games...Both Shawn Silver and Jamie Morris have shutouts this year against Memphis.
PK IS BEST IN CHL: The Ice's penalty killing unit has been superb all season and its recent efforts have made it the best in the CHL at the moment. The Ice has now killed off 26 straight opponents' power plays and lead the league with a 92.2 kill rate (71/77). On the flip side of things, the team's power play unit has drastically improved from the start of the season as the team is 8-35 (22.9%) in its last seven games and has recently moved from 16th in the league to 11th.
"LADIES NIGHT" THEN "MEN'S NIGHT" THIS WEEKEND: Friday's game is another "Ladies Night," where all ladies 18 or older get in for only $8 and $6 at the Pepsi Coliseum box office. Saturday's contest is the second "Men's Night" of the season, where all men 18 or older get in for only $8 and $6 at the Pepsi Coliseum box office. Both nights will feature prizes, preferential treatment and games all night for all the ladies and men in attendance.
