SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Bret Peppler scored a pair of goals and Todd Hosmer collected his second consecutive three-point night as they helped the Mississippi RiverKings (17-9-6) knock off their former team, the Knoxville Ice Bears (14-17-3) 6-3 on Saturday night on Concorde Career College Ice at Landers Center.
The RiverKings scored a pair of goals late in the first period. Bryan Dallaire's slipped through traffic and between the legs of Ice Bear netminder Brian Billett 16:17 into the first period. Then, just under three and a half minutes later, Todd Hosmer fed Charlie Mosey in the low slot who beat Billett on the power play to give the RiverKings a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
In the second, the RiverKings added to their lead. Bret Peppler tallied his first goal as a RiverKing as he slid the puck between the legs of Billett to put the RiverKings ahead 3-0.
Then the teams traded goals to end the second. The Ice Bears got a goal back as Garrett Vermeersch took a pass in the slot from Jason Price and ripped it past the glove to Sheehan to cut the RiverKings lead to 3-1 with 1:23 left in the middle frame. Then, with Matt Harrington in the box for high sticking, Todd Hosmer took a pass from Charlie Mosey and beat Billett on a breakaway to put the RiverKings up 4-1 with just 32 seconds left in the second period.
In the third, Knoxville cut their deficit to two once again. Dan Cesarz collected a pass from Dennis Sicard and slid the puck past Sheehan just 1:02 into the final period of regulation to cut the RiverKings' lead to 4-2.
The teams swapped goals in a span of less than 30 seconds. Linden Bahm tallied a power play goal from Todd Hosmer and Sam Higgins before Sicard tallied a goal of his own from Corey Fulton to bring the Ice Bears within two once again.
But the RiverKings added an insurance marker with just under 30 seconds to play as Peppler added his second goal of the game with an empty-netter to give the RiverKings a 6-3 win.
Garrett Sheehan (3-5-4) picked up his second consecutive victory after stopping 23 of 26 shots against. Brian Billett (2-2-0) took the loss after stopping 25 of 30 shots.
The RiverKings collected two power play goals on five opportunities, while Knoxville was held scoreless on three chances with the man-advantage.
The RiverKings return to Concorde Career College Ice at the Landers Center on Saturday, February 6 for the annual Pink in the Rink. The RiverKings will wear specialty pink jerseys to be auctioned off after the game to benefit the RiverKings ReachOut Fund. The RiverKings will also donate $2 of every ticket purchased by fans wearing pink to WINGS Supportive Care.
