Pensacola Pelicans News Release
There's nothing better than watching your home team win on the 4th of July. That's exactly what happened today as the Pelicans beat the Aviators 7-1 and split the series, each team winning two games.
There was plenty of fireworks from the bats of the Pelicans in the 2nd inning scoring six runs on five hits. Rafael Alvarez started off the inning with a triple off the left-center field wall. Josey Shannon hit a single through the right side scoring Alvarez. Larry Bethea then singled to right field moving Shannon to third base. Mike Rodriguez followed that up with yet another hit scoring Shannon. Jose Salas then got hit by a pitch. Heath Kelly then got the fifth straight hit in the inning scoring Rodriguez and Bethea. Andy Wilson then hit a sacrifice fly to right field. When it was done with the score was 6-0.
That was more than enough for Pelicans starter Jeff Norris. He baffled the Aviators hitters with his location and curve ball. He pitched 6.1 innings, gave up only one run on three hits and struck out four in his winning effort improving his record to 2-0. Relievers Gerardo Casediego, Kelvin Mitchell and Charlie Griffin came on to finsh the game pitching 2.1 perfect innings.
Coastal Bend got their lone run in the 7th inning on a Trey Salinsa single which scored Edwin Maldonado who doubled two batters earlier.
Larry Bethea added one more run for the Pelican in the 8th inngins on Larry Bethea's 8th homerun of the year.
Pensacola has the day off tomorrow and then plays the Edinburg Roadrunners at Edinburg.
