San Angelo Colts News Release

Jackson, MS--After the Colts and Senators were washed away last night a doubleheader was scheduled for tonight, and both games proved to be thrillers. San Angelo and Jackson traded blows early in game one, but for every Colts rally the Senators had one of their own. An un-earned run in the 2nd gave Jackson an early lead but Tony James answered with a 2-run bomb to give the Colts a lead. That lead would be short lived however Jackson would answer to take a 3-2 lead. San Angelo got the run back in the 5th while Jackson got it back in the bottom half. A pinch-hit RBI single by Bert Aguilar gave the Colts a 4-4 tie. However Jackson would explode for a 4 run bottom of the 6th exclamated by a Steve Newson 2-run homer and with the dust had settled the Senators snapped a 6 game losing streak with an 8-4 win. Dwayne Dobson would take the loss for the Colts while Ryan Creek took the win to go to 4-1.

In the nightcap, the Colts would get the start of the year by Dave Therneau who retired the 1st 15 batters faced, including striking out 5 in a row at one point. Through 6 innings, Therneau had allowed just a single hit, a blooper by Selwyn Langaigne. The Colts established a lead on a 6th inning Kasey Wilson 2 run scoring single against the Senators Nick Vandegriff and the Colts needed just 3 outs to split the doubleheader. Therneau started the 7th again, with one baserunner allowed through the 1st 6 innings, but trouble brewed right away as Eric Mejias led off with a single followed by a Newsom bunt. After a long battle, Josh Tranum singled to cut the Colts 2-0 lead in half. San Angelo then summoned closer Jason Von Haefen into the contest. Langaigne layed down the sacrifice bunt, but the Colts elected to get the lead runner at 3rd, and could not get the job done resulting in the bases loaded with no one out. Newly acquired Randel Shelley hit a shallow fly ball into center field that tied the ball game up as the throw came to the plate late, the Colts catcher threw wildly to 3rd allowing the winning run to score on a sac fly comboed with a throwing error and the Colts were left stunned, losing the contest 3-2. Unbelievably Therneau would be hit with the loss, although his line read 6 innings pitched, 3 hits allowed and 9 strikeouts. Alexis Guzman who pitched the 7th in relief would take the W for Jackson who sweeps the doubleheader.
