Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
COLUMBUS, GA. (March 19, 2015) - The Pensacola Ice Flyers battle back to walk away with a shootout win over the Columbus Cottonmouths in a rare Thursday morning game in front of 5,663 young fans from local schools at the Columbus Civic Center.
It was penalties in the opening period that would hurt Pensacola as four different Ice Flyers served four separate minor penalties. Columbus capitalized on two of the four power-plays with goals from Nick Curry and Levi Lind late in the first. An unassisted goal from Andy Williger contributed to the Cottonmouths three-goal lead which lead to Rod Aldoff's decision to replace John McLean with Max Strang in net for Pensacola.
Within the first five minutes of the second period, Pensacola found themselves back within one goal as Brett Lutes scored unassisted at the 3:20 make and Brett Beebe ripped a shot high, glove-side past Andrew Loewen a minute and twenty-seven seconds after making it a 3-2 game.
With 2:03 left in the second, a power-play for the Ice Flyers gave them a chance to even the game back up. However, Columbus' Shawn Bates scored shorthanded with forty-eight seconds left in the period to retake their two goal lead. With the time remaining on their power-play, Pensacola was unable to take advantage and after forty minutes of play it was a 4-2 contest.
Nineteen seconds in to the final period Adam Pawlick, like Beebe, scored with a high, glove-side wrist shot to pull the Ice Flyers back within one. Just under a few minutes remaining, a shot from Nick McParland deflected in and Pensacola's comeback was complete. Regulation time ran down and with the 4-4 tie the game went to overtime.
After a scoreless period of exciting 3-on-3 overtime hockey, the match needed to be settled in a shootout. McParland, Lutes and Nick Larson scored on their shots. Down 3-2 it was on the shoulders Columbus' Ben OQuinn to keep the Cottonmouths alive, but Strang closed the door and the Ice Flyers walked away with two points.
With the win, Pensacola now holds a record of 28-17-6 for 62 points and jump the Knoxville Ice Bears to take over fourth place by one point. Knoxville is scheduled to play Fayetteville later this evening.
The Ice Flyers return to Pensacola and will face the Louisiana Ice Gators both Friday and Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Friday night is Water Night presented by Rodizio Grill that will feature chances to win some great prizes to gear you up for the beach season.
