Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were able to fend off a rally from the Albany Devils as Bryan Lerg scored twice in third period to clinch a 5-2 win on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The Penguins raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, but saw the Devils answer twice in the second. The result was still in doubt until 1:25 remaining in regulation when Lerg was able to sweep the rebound from Geoff Walker's bid from the high slot past the leg pad of goalie Jeff Frazee.
Nineteen seconds later, Lerg added the empty-net goal for his team-leading 20th of the year.
Alex Grant allowed the Penguins to jump ahead, 1-0, as his high slapshot from the far boards deflected off of an Albany defenseman and under Frazee at 8:36 of the first.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's power play helped the Penguins go up by two with its first chance of the game. Joey Mormina sent a low wrister toward the near post that Brian Gibbons redirected into the top left corner of the net for his seventh of the season.
Mormina then pushed the score to 3-0 with 2:30 left before the intermission, skating down the right wing and beating Frazee with a snapshot inside the right post.
Albany dominated the second period and got on the board at 5:23 as Nick Palmieri broke in alone on Brad Thiessen before one-handing the puck past the outstretched leg pad of the Penguins' netminder.
Alexander Urbom's wraparound shot at 12:08 mark of middle frame got the Devils within a goal to set up a tense third period for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Thiessen made 20 saves on 22 shots by the Devils for his 19th win of the season. Frazee took the loss, turning aside 16-of-20.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins complete three-game, three-day weekend on February 5 with a Sunday matinee against the Hershey Bears at 2:00 PM. For more information, call the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
