Albany Devils News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- It they could, the Albany Devils would have skipped the opening period Saturday against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Following three goals against in the first, the Devils answered with two second period tallies only to eventually fall 5-2 after two late goals, including an empty netter, by the Penguins.

The Devils go to 19-18-5-3, while the Penguins move into a first-place tie in the Eastern Conference at 27-13-2-4.

Nick Palmieri had a goal and an assist and Alexander Urbom also scored. Steve Zalewski and Mattias Tedenby each picked up helpers and Jeff Frazee made 16 stops in his 20th appearance.

The Penguins received scoring from Alex Grant, Brian Gibbons, Joey Mormina and two from Bryan Lerg. In goal, Brad Thiessen had 20 stops for his 19th victory.

Grant began the scoring at 8:26 and Gibbons followed on the power play at 15:29. Before the end of the first, Mormina's wrist shot beat Frazee at 17:30.

In the second, Palmieri netted his fourth goal of the season with a nifty move that ended with a bank-handed tap in at 5:23. Zalewski was credited with the assist.

Midway through the period, Palmieri received the puck from Tedenby and attempted a move to the goal. The puck popped out to Urbom, who wrapped the puck around the net and past Thiessen's outstretched stick at 12:08.

Despite allowing a power play goal in the first, the Devils penalty kill did all it could for the remainder of the second. Most notably, it stymied three consecutive Wilkes-Barre/Scranton opportunities in the second period.

In the third, the Devils comeback was squashed when Lerg scored scored with 1:25 remaining. He added an empty-net goal with 1:06 on the clock.

The Devils will try and rebound Friday when they travel to Hamilton for the first time in franchise history. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. and the game can be heard on 104.5 "The Team" ESPN Radio or online at ahllive.com.
