Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
Adam Berkhoel made 27 saves to record his second consecutive shutout, and the third in his past four starts, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 3-0 win against the Binghamton Senators on Saturday night at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
The win improved the Penguins record to 8-5-0-1 (17 points), and moved the team ahead of the Philadelphia Phantoms and into fourth place in the East Division standings. Binghamton fell to 8-5-1-1 (18 points).
Berkhoel, who entered the season with just one American Hockey League shutout to his credit, now leads the league in that category after appearing in just eight games so far this season. He stopped 26 shots in a 4-0 win last Friday against the Lowell Devils, and shut out that same Lowell team with a 46 save effort on October 22.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton held the league's top power play unit in check, limiting the Senators to just two opportunities on the man advantage. Binghamton came into the game sporting a 27.9% success rate (19 goals/68 tries).
Janne Pesonen opened the scoring for the Penguins, picking up a Chris Minard centering pass and scoring on a twirling backhand in the slot for a power play goal 7:53 into the game. The goal was Pesonen's fourth of the season, and second in as many nights.
Dustin Jeffrey followed five-and-a-half minutes later, pouncing on a rebound off a Connor James shot for his third goal of the year.
Dave Gove finished off the scoring, taking a quick feed from James and picking he far side of the Binghamton net for his second of the year, 12:56 into the second period.
Brian Elliot made 29 saves in a losing effort for the Senators.
