Penguins Can't Push Past Falcons in 7-4 Loss

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins could not fend off three power play goals and a balanced attack from the Springfield Falcons as they took a 7-4 loss on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Bryan Lerg's two goal effort was not enough for the Penguins to overcome an opportunistic Falcons squad.

With the game tied, 3-3, and still up for grabs in the second period, Springfield pulled away for good with a timely two-man advantage. Cam Atkinson took a cross-crease pass and swept a low shot through the pads of Penguins goalie Scott Munroe at the 15:08 mark of the frame. The ensuing 5-on-4 was no kinder to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as John Moore found the right side of the net to put Springfield ahead, 5-3.

Lerg gave his team life when he struck 1:43 into the third period with his second of the night and pulled his team within a goal. As they had done all game, Springfield responded.

Ryan Russell needed only 36 seconds to give the Falcons a two-goal cushion once again, taking advantage of a net-front scramble and poking the puck across the goal line. Springfield then put the game firmly out of reach on Oliver Gabriel's tally with 6:22 left in regulation.

The Penguins found themselves down 2-0 not even five minutes into the first after a pair special teams goals by the Falcons. An early power play gave Springfield the 1-0 edge at 1:48 on Martin St. Pierre's goal and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was soon victimized thereafter by Nick Drazenovic's shorthanded marker.

Paul Thompson cut the Falcons' lead in half a minute later, firing the puck over the shoulder of Allan York to make the score 2-1 going into the first break.

With the Penguins on the power play, Eric Tangradi floated a pass to the far post that Geoff Walker hammered past Paul Dainton - who replaced an injured York earlier in the second - to make it 2-2 at 8:48.

Lerg answered Mike Thomas' go-ahead goal later in the frame to give the Penguins the momentum once again, but the Falcons soon hopped on the 5-on-3 that proved to be the turning point.

Munroe took the loss with 16 stops on 21 shots through two periods of play. Brad Thiessen made three saves in one period of relief.
