Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX. - Wynn Pelzer tossed five innings of no-hit ball and Kellen Kulbacki provided two hits and two runs as San Antonio topped Corpus Christi 5-1 Wednesday night at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
Despite the loss, the Hooks (20-19) remain a game behind first-place Frisco in the Texas League South.
Pelzer (5-3) blanked the Hooks through five innings to notch his fourth consecutive win. He walked four and hit a batter while striking out five and throwing 83 pitches. Pelzer had plenty of support on offense.
Kulbacki opened the second with a double and, after a walk was issued to Christian Colonel, scored on a double by Sawyer Carroll. Colonel raced in from third on a ground ball out off the bat of Luis Martinez, giving the Missions a 2-0 lead after two.
A two-out single by Kulbacki in the third sparked another run. Kulbacki advanced to second on a wild pitch uncorked by Hooks' starter Jeremy Johnson (0-3) and scored on Colonel's single to make it a 3-0 game.
The Missions (19-20) added markers in the seventh and eighth. Corpus Christi's lone run came in the ninth when Jon Gaston opened the frame with a triple to the gap in right-center. Gaston scored on T.J. Steele's bouncing single up the middle.
Reliever Erik Stiller made his Hooks' debut, tossing two innings of shutout ball. He allowed one hit and one walk.
Following Wednesday's game, the Astros made a number of roster moves affecting the Hooks. First, catcher J.R. Towles, who has not played in the last six games, was placed on the disabled list. Towles injured his right thumb while stealing a base last Thursday in the opening game of this road trip at Frisco.
In addition, pitchers Sergio Perez and Erick Abreu have been called up to Triple-A Round Rock. In eight starts with the Hooks this season, Perez is 2-3 with a 3.09 ERA. Abreu posted a record of 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in 11 relief appearances for Corpus Christi.
Perez was scheduled to start for the Hooks Thursday in San Antonio. A starter for the series finale has not been announced.
Slated to join the Hooks in San Antonio Thursday are catcher Jonathon Fixler and pitcher Brian Wabick. Fixler, who has played portions of the last two seasons with the Hooks, comes to the club from Lexington in the South Atlantic League, where he was batting .203 with one home run and eight RBIs in 20 games.
Wabick, a right-handed pitcher, has spent the entire season with Lancaster in the California League, where he was 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA in 14 relief appearances.
Corpus Christi's eight-game roadie concludes Thursday night at 7:05. The Missions will have Corey Kluber (1-3) on the hill.
