Cardinals Rally Late For 7-6 Win

May 19, 2010 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

Daryl Jones capped a ninth-inning rally for the Springfield Cardinals with a game-winning single as they came from five runs down for a stunning 7-6 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Tuesday night. Jones knocked in Curt Smith, who had tied the game with a two-run triple, as part of a four-run rally that snapped the Travs short two-game winning streak. It was the seventh consecutive game played by the Travs decided by one run (2-5 record).

The loss drops the Travs to 15-21 while Springfield improves to 21-17.

The Travs jumped out to an early lead getting a two-run homer from Paul McAnulty (9) off Gary Daley in the first inning. Following a two-out single from Efren Navarro, McAnulty jumped on a 2-1 pitch for a line-drive home run to right field giving the Travs a 2-0 lead.

The Travs took advantage of a handful of mistakes by Springfield to score three runs in the third inning. They sent nine batters to the plate thanks to four walks, three errors and one base hit and it all started with a leadoff walk to Carlos Colmenares. Navarro followed with a single lined in front of Jones in left field. He misplayed the ball allowing Colmenares to advance to third then threw wildly past second base as Navarro tried to advance. The double error scored Colmenares for a 3-0 lead. It appeared Daley was going to get out of the inning with just one run scored when he got two quick outs then induced a groundball from Jeremy Moore to first base. Daley though, dropped the ball on a flip from Smith as Navarro scored on the third error of the inning. The error seemed to daze Daley as he proceeded to walk the next three hitters including a bases-loaded walk to Clay Fuller for a 5-0 lead.

Travs right hander Jeremy Thorne made the start after spending the last three weeks on the disabled list with a strained glut muscle in his left leg. He was effectively wild during a 5.1 inning start where he gave up four hits and four walks, but allowed only one run. The only run he allowed came in the fifth inning when Antone DeJesus doubled in Pete Kozma to cut the Travs lead to 5-1.

Arkansas rebuilt a five-run cushion when Fuller ripped a Jason Buursma offering in the fifth inning for a solo home run (3). The Springfield bullpen shutdown the Travs for the most part though after Daley left the game in the fourth. Buursma only allowed that one run in three innings. Matt Meyer threw two perfect innings striking out four. Blake King (2-0) earned the win with a perfect ninth inning recording two strikeouts.

The Travs relief effort was another story though, as the Cardinals scored a run in each of the last three innings. Barret Browning relieved Thorne and got the last two outs of the sixth inning. With two outs in the seventh inning, Browning allowed a single to Aaron Miles and an RBI double to Matt Carpenter bringing Springfield within a 6-2 score.

Taylor Wilding gave up a run in the eighth inning when Kozma's two-out single knocked in Aaron Luna to make the Travs lead 6-3.

Right hander Mike Kohn entered in the ninth with just one run allowed in 17.2 innings pitched. He didn't have the usual life on his fastball though and struggled with command in blowing his first save of the year. Adron Chambers drew a leadoff walk then Kohn hit Miles to bring the tying run to the plate. Carpenter delivered an RBI single to center then Smith whacked a line drive to the right-field gap knocking in the tying runs with a triple. Kohn rebounded to strikeout the next two batters but Jones came through with the game-winning single on a blooper into right field.

Time of game was 2:52 and the paid attendance numbered 3,971.

NOTE: Travelers right fielder Julio Perez left the game after grounding out in the seventh inning due to a hamstring strain.
