Pelletier Recognized by AHL

SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Springfield Falcons goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending February 9, 2003. Pelletier stopped 91 of 95 shots in three games for the surging Falcons.

Pelletier began his week at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Wednesday, posting a 23-save shutout of the East Division-leading Binghamton Senators. On Friday, he faced his former teammates from Lowell and turned aside 31 of 32 shots to lead Springfield to a 2-1 victory. The next night, Pelletier made 36 saves, including 19 in the third period and overtime, to help the Falcons tie Manitoba, 3-3. For the week, Pelletier posted a record of 2-0-1 with a 1.30 goals against average and a .958 save percentage.

In recognition of his achievement, Pelletier will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Westfield Youth Hockey Association in Pelletier's name.

Pelletier, a first-round pick by Philadelphia in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, was acquired in a trade by the Phoenix Coyotes from the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 31, 2002. He is unbeaten in his last eight starts and 7-1-2 since joining the Falcons on Jan. 16. On the season, the Atlanta-born Pelletier is 13-11-2 with a 2.86 GAA and three shutouts, and has appeared in two NHL games with the Coyotes. Pelletier is 73-49-10 in 138 career AHL contests with Springfield, Lowell and Philadelphia, and has played in three AHL All-Star Games, earning MVP honors at the 1999 event.
