Pelicans Win the Series Opener

Ricardo Cordova's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled the Pensacola Pelicans to a 5-4 victory over the El Paso Diablos on Monday night.

The Diablos opened up the scoring in the top of the first. Juan Camacho had a run-scoring single and Walter Olmstead hit a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 advantage.

The Pelicans tied things up in the bottom of the second. Trino Aguilar reached on an error on pitcher Michael Cervera. Aguilar would move around the horn on a pair of singles and crossed the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Bo Brown. Ceasar Aranguren also had an RBI single as Pensacola tied things up at two.

Pensacola took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Reynolds led off the frame with a single. He moved all the way to third base on back-to-back walks yielded by Mike Cervera. He would score on a fielder's choice hit off the bat of Marcos Rodriguez for the 3-2 lead.

The Diablos would re-take the lead in the top of the sixth. Juan Camacho led off the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a ground out hit off the bat of Walter Olmstead. The next at-bat Kent flared a single into left, Camacho raced for third base and scored on a throwing error from the left fielder Calzado. Matt Kent would later score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Evan Conley as El Paso took a 4-3 advantage.

The Pelicans would score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh. Ricardo Cordova had an RBI single. Cordova would later score the winning run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Napolean Calzado, as Pensacola took the 5-4 lead.

Todd Androsko (4-5) and Carl Schaefer combined for three innings of scoreless baseball.

Mike Cervera threw five innings allowing one earned run off of five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Colin Young tossed six full allowing four earned runs off of nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Diablos will take on Pensacola in the second game of the series on Tuesday night at 5:35 (MST). Josh Neitz will match up against Jesen Merle. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1380 AM and at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
