
Birds Blast Out Win

Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (9-9) hit their way to a 15-2 victory over the Shreveport Sports (4-14) on Monday night at the Birdcage.
The Canaries took the lead early and did not let go. The Birds batted through the order in the first inning. Cameron Coughlan walked and came around to score on a triple to center field by Trevor Lawhorn, 1-0 Canaries. Ben Van Iderstine reached on a throwing error by pitcher, Matt Yeatman. The error allowed Lawhorn to come home from third base, 2-0. Van Iderstine scored on an RBI single by Scott Lydy and Lydy was driven home by Orlando Miller. At the end of the first inning, the Canaries led 4-0.
The Birds put two more up in the third. Van Iderstine singled and scored on an RBI double by Lydy, 5-0. Miller hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive in Lydy, giving the Canaries a 6-0 advantage.
Cameron Coughlan led off the fourth inning with a walk and worked his way around the bases with a stolen base before scoring on a single by Imwalle and giving the Birds a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Canaries worked their way to a bases loaded situation with two walks and a single. Imwalle hit his 12th home run of the season, and first grand slam, to lift the Birds to an 11-0 lead.
The Sports finally put their mark on the board in the top of the eighth inning. Austin Pride led off with a single and Deacon Burns followed with a walk. J.P. Schmidt singled driving in Pride and Burns to give the Sports their only runs of the night, 11-2.
The Canaries took those runs right back in the bottom of the eighth. Juan Figueroa walked. Ben Van Iderstine struck out, but reached on a passed ball. Imwalle singled, driving in Figueroa, 12-2. Van Iderstine and Imwalle scored on double to left center by Lydy putting the Birds up by a dozen, 14-2. The final run came when Lydy scored on a wild pitch giving the Canaries the 15-2 win.
Kevin Cheppenko (4-4) evened his record with his fourth win of the season. Matt Yeatman (5-4) suffered the loss for the Sports.
The Canaries and Sports play the middle game of the series Tuesday where the Birds will be celebrating "Native American Heritage Night."
