Zebulon, N.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans rallied to score an 8-4 win in 10 innings against the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. The win was the seventh straight for Myrtle Beach (32-28) over Carolina (20-41).
Grant Sides (2-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits. The right-hander recorded only two outs in the tenth.
Ryan Harvery (5-1) left with the win after pitching a scoreless ninth and tenth.
Myrtle Beach loaded the bases on a walk, error and single by Jake Skole. Edwin Garcia lined a hit into left field for the go-ahead run. After Preston Beck hit into a fielder's choice, Luis Sardinas drew a bases loaded walk to make it 6-4. A two-run single by Patrick Cantwell capped the four-run inning.
The comeback spoiled another good outing by Shawn Morimando. The left-hander allowed three runs on five hits over 6.1 innings. Joe Maloney snapped Morimando's scoreless streak at 23.2 innings with a two-out, RBI-double in the fourth.
The Mudcats jumped out front for the 34th time in 61 games. Charlie Valerio singled home Bo Greenwell and Tony Wolters on a single off the high wall in right field for a 2-0 lead in the second inning. A sacrifice fly to right by Jerrud Sabourin made it 3-0 in the third.
After Maloney's fourth inning double, the Mudcats got the run back when Tyler Naquin led off the fifth with a solo shot to right. It was the center fielder's fifth of the year.
Trever Adams, who finished the night with four hits, cracked a towering home run off Morimando in the sixth to cut the Pelicans' deficit to two.
Myrtle Beach tied the game 4-4 in the seventh against Carolina's bullpen. A throwing error on a double steal, followed by a groundout by Patrick Cantwell scored the tying runs.
Naquin and Tony Wolters paced the Mudcats offense with two hits apiece.
The Mudcats hope to avoid a sweep at the hands of Myrtle Beach on Sunday, June 9th. First pitch at Five County Stadium is set for 2:00 p.m. Kids can run the bases after every Sunday home game, weather permitting. Purchase tickets today by calling (919) 269-2287, or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
