WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem Dash improved to 8-1 this season against the Wilmington Blue Rocks, knocking them off 9-5 in front of 5,779 Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark.

Just like in Friday night's series opener, Winston-Salem (33-29) opened the contest's scoring with a big first inning. After Joey DeMichele started things off with a single, Chris Curley took Blue Rocks starter John Lamb (4-6) deep to give the Dash a lead just two hitters into the frame. Kevin Smith then smashed a double to the gap in right-center field. One out later, Courtney Hawkins blasted one over the left field wall to make it 4-0.

The score would stay that way until the third when Wilmington (31-31) scored for the first time in the series. Kernersville native Kenny Swab started the frame by taking Winston starter Jake Cose (1-1) deep for his third home run of the year. Alex Hudak followed with a double, and the left fielder came around two groundouts later for the Blue Rocks' second tally.

In the bottom half of the frame, Winston would get a run back when Smith launched a solo shot to center off Lamb, giving the catcher his seventh long ball of the year. Winston tied a season high with three homers during Saturday's win.

The lead was pushed back to four in the fourth. Adam Heisler and Curley both doubled against Lamb to plate Winston-Salem's sixth tally of the contest.

The final run against Cose for Wilmington came in the fifth when Cheslor Cuthbert drove in a run with a single. The righty lasted six innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out five to pick up his first quality start and victory of his High-A career.

The Dash put the game out of reach for good in the seventh when they brought their final three runs of the night home. Smith and Jeremy Farrell hit back-to-back run-producing doubles, and Rangel Ravelo picked up his 18th RBI of the season on a fielder's choice.

The night's scoring wrapped up the eighth when Jared Schlehuber hit a two-run homer off Andrew Brackman, who pitched two frames in his Winston-Salem debut. Schlehuber's homer was the NC State product's lone hiccup.

The Dash and Blue Rocks wrap up this three-game series Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem will turn to right-hander Bryan Blough (3-4, 5.00 ERA), while Wilmington counters with fellow right-hander Kyle Smith (4-1, 1.92 ERA). Coverage on wsdash.com begins with the Pregame Dash at 1:45, and first pitch is scheduled for 2.
