Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans secured their first series win of the year by downing the Wilmington Blue Rocks 5-4 in the series finale at Frawley Stadium. For the second straight year, the Pelicans are off to a solid 3-1 start after four games. The Pelicans currently stand alone in first place, a half game ahead of the Salem Avalanche.
The Pelicans drew first blood in the top of the second inning. Tyler Flowers jump-started it all by lining a double to right field. After an Ernesto Mejia walk, Roberto Alvarez reached on a fielder's choice. With one out, Willie Cabrera roped a double to right field that brought home both Flowers and Alvarez to give the Pelicans a 2-0 advantage.
It didn't take long for the Blue Rocks to respond. In the bottom of the second, Joseph Dickerson doubled to left field. David Wood then drew a free pass. Dickerson would later cross the plate on an RBI single by Joshua Johnson. The next batter, Matthew Morizio, stroked a double left field to drive in Johnson and Wood.
Gorkys Hernandez helped the Pelicans manufacture the tying run in the top of the third. He led off the frame by singling to right. He then stole second base. With Hernandez now in scoring position, Travis Jones delivered an RBI single to left field to level the score at 3-3.
The Pelicans and the Blue Rocks each added a run to push the score to 4-4 after four innings of play.
After three straight scoreless innings, the Pelicans broke through with the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth. Willie Cabrera, who went 2-4 with a run scored and 2 RBIs, led off the inning with a single. Jon Mark Owings then scarified Cabrera to second. After Paul Bennett struck out, Gorkys Hernandez delivered what turned out to be the game-winning RBI single to bring home Cabrera. Hernandez finished 2-3 with a run scored and an all-important RBI.
Once again, the Pelicans bullpen proved to be the difference. Chris Vines picked up the win in relief of Ryne Reynoso, who only lasted 3.1 innings. Vines was lights-out in 3.2 innings pitched, allowing only one hit, while striking out five. Kevin Gunderson entered in the eighth and sealed the victory for the Pelicans, allowing only one hit in two innings of work.
The Pelicans are back in action tomorrow night to begin their series against the Potomac Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Pfitzner Stadium. The Pelicans Pregame Show will begin at 6:45 p.m. on ESPN Radio "The Team" or online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
