Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
PELICANS SUFFER FIRST SETBACK: In frigid temperatures, the Pelicans bats went cold as they fell for the first time in 2008, 3-1, to the Wilmington Blue Rocks Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE.
The Blue Rocks got after Pelicans' starter Kyle Cofield early, posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Cofield walked Jeff Bianchi. Joe Dickerson followed with a triple to the right-center field alley to score Bianchi and give the Blue Rocks the lead, 1-0. Dickerson would score a batter later as Anthony Seratelli singled back up the middle to give the Blue Rocks a 2-0 lead.
Wilmington added to their lead in the third inning. Bianchi led off with a single off of Cofield and stole second base. Dickerson followed with a single to move him to third and Bianchi scored when Wilver Perez singled a batter later.
Blue Rocks' starter Greg Holland handcuffed the Pelicans for five innings, before departing in favor of Everett Teaford. Myrtle Beach finally broke through for a run against Teaford in the sixth inning. Derrick Arnold led off with a double and came around to score a batter later as Tyler Flowers ripped a double into the left field corner to cut the lead to 3-1.
That was all the Pelicans could manage however, as Teaford settled in and finished out the game with four solid innings of work. Holland (1-0) was credited with the win after shutting out the Pelicans on four hits over his five innings, while Teaford earned his first save of the season.
Cofield (0-1), who permitted three earned runs on seven hits was tagged with the loss for Myrtle Beach.
LHP Carlos Sencion was sensational in relief for the Pelicans, turning in four hitless innings of relief following Cofield's departure. In his first appearance of the season, Sencion fanned six Blue Rocks.
The two teams wrap up the season-opening four-game series on Monday night with a 6:35 PM start time. RHP Ryne Reynoso (0-0, 0.00) will make his first start of the year for the Pelicans against RHP Josh Godin (0-0, 0.00) for Wilmington.
STREAKS AND SUCH: CF Gorkys Hernandez stands as the lone Pelican to hit safely in the first three games of the season, collecting a single in each of the team's first three contests. Hernandez currently has the longest hit-streak at three games.
RECENT TRANSACTIONS: LHP Lee Hyde, RHP Jose Santiago, LHP Jon Venters; LHP Tyler Wilson and OF Quentin Davis will open the season on the Disabled List, and were placed there today (4/4).
