Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH - Salem Avalanche starting pitcher Raymar Diaz only needed one run of support on Monday night against the Pelicans, but instead his offense provided him with 11 runs of support as the Avs shutout the Birds 11-0 in game one of a four-game series in the Roanoke Valley. Diaz held Myrtle Beach to just two hits in six impressive innings before giving way to the Salem bullpen, which held up its end of the bargain by tossing the final three innings in scoreless fashion. Elvis Andrus accounted for half of the Pelicans hit total by going 2-for-4 with a double, giving him seven multi-hit games, tying Quentin Davis for the most multi-hit efforts this season. The loss drops the Pelicans to 11-13, while the Avalanche improved to 11-11.

Salem jumped out to an early advantage in the bottom of the first by taking advantage of a throwing error charged to Pelicans third baseman Paul Bennett. After Bennett made a nice play on a sizzling line drive hit by lead-off man Josh Flores, his throw to first skipped in the dirt and went underneath the tarp, lining the right field wall, which allowed Flores to advance to second. The next batter, Tommy Manzella, laced an RBI double into the right field corner, scoring Flores to make it 1-0.

Two innings later the game went into a tailspin for the Pelicans. Former Tennessee Vol Eric King led off the bottom of the third with a double down the left field line. After Flores drew a walk, and Manzella pushed down a sacrifice bunt, the Jake Stevens intentionally walked Eli Iorg to load the bases. With the bases jammed Ole Sheldon roped a two-run single into centerfield, to give the Avs a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning with the bases loaded Mark Ori smacked an RBI single into right, scoring Iorg to make it a 4-0 edge. Then, with the bases still packed, Mitch Einertson delivered the big blow, a bases clearing triple into left-centerfield, which put Salem up 7-0.

Salem wasn't finished yet as they went on to hang two more runs in the fifth inning highlighted by an RBI double off the lumber of Flores. The Avalanche ended their scoring in the bottom of the 6th when they stepped on home plate two more times, with the combination of a wild pitch uncorked by reliever Jang Ji Cho and an RBI double courtesy of Mark Ori to make it 11-0.

Stevens (L, 2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs, eight earned, on seven hits, and three walks. The lefty was chased after 4.2 innings of work. Reliever Jang Ji Cho gave up four hits to score the final two runs of the game on four hits in 1.1 innings out of the pen. Diaz (W, 1-2) earned his first win of the year by virtue of tossing six scoreless frames.

Aside from the two hits collected by Andrus the Birds received base singles from Willie Cabrera and J.D. Roberts. The 3-6 spots in the Pelicans line-up combined to go 0-12 at the plate in the loss.

The Pelicans take on the Salem Avalanche in game two of a four-game series. Right-hander James Parr (0-3, 4.60 ERA) will start for the Pelicans while Brian Bogusevic (1-2, 4.34 ERA) will go for the Avalanche.
