Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, pounded Myrtle Beach in the first game of a four-game series Monday night on Lewis-Gale Medical Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. The Avs reached .500 once again with an 11-0 victory. Every Salem batter reached base and 8 of 10 position players scored a run.

The Avalanche led 1-0 and batted around in the third inning against Pelican starter Jake Stevens. Eric King started the charge with a double to left. Then, Josh Flores walked and Tommy Manzella moved each runner up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. After Eli Iorg was intentionally walked, Ole Sheldon punched a single up the middle to score King. Then, J.R. Towles bounced a ball to the left side of the infield and Paul Bennett unsuccessfully threw to second. In the process, Flores scored to give the Avs a 3-0 lead edge. Next, Mark Ori golfed a single to right. With the bases still loaded, Mitch Einertson blasted a triple that emptied the basepaths and staked the Avs to a 7-0 lead.

Righty Raymar Diaz was stellar for Salem in holding the lead. He tossed six innings of shutout baseball and surrendered just two hits to garner his first win of the season. The Avs had scored just three runs while he threw in his first four starts. Tonight, 11 runs came across.

Eli Iorg drilled a sixth inning double to left center to prolong his hit streak to 14 games. Mark Ori's 3-for-4 night pushed his chain to 10 consecutive games with at least one hit. Salem also got a trio of hits for Tommy Manzella for the second time this homestand. The victory marked the largest winning margin of the Salem season.

Tomorrow's game two begins at 7:07 with lefty Brian Bogusevic appearing against Myrtle hurler James Parr in a rematch of last Thursday night. Bogusevic scratched his first win of the season out in that game.
