WOODBRIDGE, VA - In the highly anticipated rematch between Winston-Salem and Potomac, not only were tempers held in check, so was the Warthogs offense as the Nationals held on to a 3-2 victory on Monday night in Woodbridge. After a benches clearing brawl ended the previous game between these two teams, game one of this four-game series was played without incident as the Nationals utilized a strong start from John Lannan (4-0) to earn he win.
Potomac scored first when Ian Desmond hit an RBI groundout to score Brandon Powell to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. Potomac would strike again in similar fashion in the fourth innings, as Desmond slapped another RBI groundout with the bases loaded to score Dee Brown and push the Nationals lead to 2-0. Offilio Castro would add an RBI single in the fifth inning to plate Rob Sandora and extend Potomac's lead to 3-0.
The Warthogs offense finally showed some semblance of life in the seventh inning when Micah Schnurstein hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to 3-1. The next inning, Rod Allen Jr. smacked his first home run of the season, a solo shot that made the score 3-2. But that was as close as the Warthogs would get as Potomac closer Alex Morales shut down the Winston-Salem attack over the final inning and a third to collect his second save of the season.
Lannan, who did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, tossed 7 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out three. Warthogs' starter Derek Rodriguez (2-1) struggled with his control, as he took the loss after giving up three earned runs on six hits while walking a season high five batters in five innings.
Game two of the four-game series will take place on Tuesday, May 1 at 7:30 PM at Pfitzner Stadium. The Warthogs will send RHP Justin Cassel (4-0, 1.03) to the mound and the Nationals will counter with RHP Carlos Martinez (0-2, 5.28).
Notes: The Warthogs offense has been limited to three runs on seven hits over the past two games...With another error on Monday night, Winston-Salem has committed at least one error in 17 consecutive game and has a Carolina League high 36 for the season...Victor Mercedes has been suspended three games for his involvement in initiating the brawl on Thursday night. Mercedes was the only player to receive a suspension, which he began serving today...With three more double plays turned on Monday, the Warthogs have forced opponents into a league high 30 double plays for the season.
