Pelicans Pitching Prevails in Finale

May 1, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

Pitching stole the show on Sunday afternoon as the Pelicans defeated the Keys, 2-1, in the series finale in Myrtle Beach. RHP Robbie Erlin allowed just one run on one hit over seven innings as he picked up his second victory of the year. Keys starter, LHP Nathan Moreau, surrendered just two runs on six hits over five innings of work but fell to 2-2 on the season. Frederick finished up their seven-game road trip 4-3 as they now sit at 10-12 on the 2011 campaign.

The Keys and Pelicans breezed through the game's first few innings as Erlin and Moreau were on point. Frederick struck first in the third inning when 2B Bobby Stevens led off with a home run to left field. Stevens' second homer of the season gave the Keys a 1-0 lead heading the bottom of the third.

Through the first four innings, Nathan Moreau allowed just two Pelicans to reach base. Myrtle Beach finally got on the board against Moreau in the fifth. With two out and RF Jared Prince on third, DH Jared Bolden singled home Prince to equalize the score at one. In the bottom of the sixth, CF Jared Hoying hit a RBI double down the right field line to give Myrtle Beach their first lead of the game at 2-1. Hoying's double was Moreau final pitch of the evening.

LHP Chris Petrini entered for Moreau and after he walked Prince to load the bases, Petrini got C Zach Zaneski to ground into a 5-2-3 double play and 2B Santiago Chirino to fly out to right to end the threat.

Robbie Erlin finished out his afternoon after seven strong innings. After the Stevens home run, Erlin retired the final 15 batters he faced. LHP Joseph Ortiz closed out the win for Myrtle Beach with two scoreless innings of relief.

Frederick returns home on Monday night when they face the Winston-Salem Dash for the start of a three-game series. RHP Ryan O'Shea (2-1, 1.99) gets the start for the Keys while the Dash will turn to LHP Hector Santiago (0-2, 5.68). First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
