Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Pelicans ended their homestand just as it began, with a Robbie Erlin masterpiece. The lefty pitched seven innings of one-hit, one-run ball and Joe Ortiz finished the gem with two scoreless frames as Myrtle Beach took the rubber game of their three-game weekend series over the Frederick Keys, 2-1 at BB&T Coastal Field.
Erlin (2-0) was brilliant once again for the Pelicans. The only blemish on his day was a Bobby Stevens leadoff home run in the third inning. He struck out six and walked one as he went seven innings for the second straight start. The Santa Cruz, CA native retired the final 15 batters he faced after the homer.
The Pelicans were shut down for the first four innings by Frederick southpaw Nathan Moreau. Jared Prince got things started in the fifth with a leadoff double and he moved to third on a flyout to right by Zach Zaneski. After a rare Santiago Chirino strikeout, Jared Bolden kept up his hot hitting with an opposite-field single to left center to tie the game at one.
Myrtle Beach took the lead the following inning and knocked out Moreau. Mitch Hilligoss drew a leadoff walk to start the frame and Mike Olt singled him to second. Jared Hoying broke out of a 3-for-23 slump with a double down the first base line over the drawn-in infield to put the Birds in front 2-1. Moreau (2-2) was charged with two runs in five-plus innings, he gave up six hits, walked two and struck out four.
Keys' left-hander Chris Petrini escaped a bases-loaded, no out jam in the fifth to hold the Pelicans' lead at 2-1. He finished the game for the Keys with three scoreless innings and did not allow a hit.
Joe Ortiz came on for Erlin to start the eighth and allowed just a one-out single to Brian Ward. He set down the next five hitters to end the game and record his first save of the season.
Left fielder Ryan Strausborger continued to torment Frederick pitching, as he went 2-for-4 for another multiple-hit game. In six games against the Keys, Strausborger is 16-for-24 (.667) and he raised his overall batting average to .343.
Frederick goes home for a three-game series against Winston-Salem starting Monday. The Pelicans hit the road Monday and start their first series in Potomac with Barret Loux on the mound. First pitch at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Pelicans return to BB&T Coastal Field for a six-game homestand beginning on Tuesday, May 10 against Kinston. The Indians are in town for three games before the Lynchburg Hillcats come in for a three-game weekend series. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
