Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
SALEM, VA - On Wednesday night the stars were aligned for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans as the "Fightin' Feathers" played arguably their most complete game of the 2007 season in a 6-1 victory over the Salem Avalanche. The Pelicans offense pounded out a season-high 13 hits, while the pitching duo of James Parr and Jonny Venters held the Avalanche just three hits, a season-low for a Pelicans opponent. Eleven of the Birds 13 hits were singles, but Paul Bennett and Quentin Davis each mixed in clutch two-run triples in the win. The Pelicans improved to 12-13, while the Avalanche fell to 11-12.
Myrtle Beach got on the scoreboard for the first time in the series in the top of the 2nd inning thanks to three straight hits to start the frame. After back-to-back singles from Isaiah Ka'aihue and Roberto Alvarez, Bennett appeared to be bunting after flashing bunt on the first pitch he saw from Salem starter Brian Bogusevic. With the corners playing in on the grass to guard against the bunt, Bennett pulled back the bat and swung away, belting a deep drive into the left-centerfield alley. The ball rolled to the fence and Bennett checked in with a two-run triple to give the Pelicans a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning with Derrick Arnold at second base after reaching on a fielder's choice Robert Marcial lined an RBI single into left field, to increase the Birds advantage, 3-0.
In the top of the 3rd the Pelicans tacked on another run when Ka'aihue smoked a line drive single into left field, scoring Quentin Davis, who reached with a lead-off single and moved to second by virtue of his league-leading 14th stolen base of the year. Ka'aihue's second hit in as many at-bats gave the Pelicans a 4-0 lead.
Parr worked a no-hitter into the 4th inning, and didn't allow a runner to move past second base until the 5th, which is when Salem would break up the shut out bid. Ryan Reed led off the 5th with a bunt single and moved to second after an infield single legged out by Orlando Rosales. A sacrifice bunt laid down by Billy Hart moved both runners into scoring position. The next batter, Eric King, drove then drove in Reed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, making the score 4-1.
The Pelicans weren't finished just yet and provided the pitching staff with more than enough insurance in the top of the 6th. With two outs and Willie Cabrera on at second base after reaching with a single and Marcial aboard thanks to a fielder's choice, Davis hammered a deep line drive over the head of Josh Flores in centerfield and raced around the base paths before sliding safely into third with the Pelicans second two-run triple of the evening. The three-bagger gave "Q" his team-leading fourth triple of the season and made the score 6-1 in favor of the Pelicans.
Five Pelicans finished with two hits including Davis (2-4), Clint Sammons (2-5), Ka'aihue (2-4), Alvarez (2-5), and Bennett (2-4).
Parr was outstanding in the start, allowing just one run on three hits and one walk. He also struck out four in his first win of the season. Venters slung four no-hit innings of relief in which he fanned three to pick up his first save of the year. The lefty has not allowed a run in seven innings this year. The loss was charged to Bogusevic, who allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings and dropped to 1-3 on the year.
The Pelicans take on the Salem Avalanche in game two of a four-game series. Right-hander James Parr (0-3, 4.60 ERA) will start for the Pelicans while Brian Bogusevic (1-2, 4.34 ERA) will go for the Avalanche. First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. and the game broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
