Pelicans One Win Away From Tying Franchise Record

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Scott Diamond and Cole Rohrbough each threw a complete game shutout to help the Pelicans sweep the doubleheader from the Wilmington Blue Rocks in front of 2,722 fans at BB&T Coastal Field. The Pelicans took game one 6-0 and game two 2-0. The Pelicans are now one win away from equaling the franchise record of 88 set back in 2000.

Game 1:

The Pelicans catapulted to an early lead in the first inning. Travis Jones reached on a one out error by third baseman Josh Johnson. Tyler Flowers followed by drawing his 95th walk of the season. One batter later, Eric Campbell belted his 18th home run of the season to give the Pelicans a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Pelicans added another run courtesy of the 11th home run of the season for Concepcion Rodriguez.

The Pelicans kept the momentum alive in the fifth inning. Travis Jones and Tyler Flowers drew back-to-back walks. Then, Ernesto Mejia hit a lined shot into left-center field to score Jones. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Brandon Hicks hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Flowers to extend the lead to 6-0.

Pelicans starter Scott Diamond turned in one of his finest outings of the season. In picking up his Carolina League best 12th win, he allowed only five hits . It was only the third complete game performance of the season for Myrtle Beach. Carlos Rivas and Deunte Heath picked up the other two seven-inning complete games.

The loss was tagged on Blue Rocks starter Matt Kniginyzky, who lasted 4.1 innings.

Game 2:

For the third straight game in the series, the Birds grabbed the first lead. In the second, Braves 2007 first round draft pick Jason Heyward reached on an error by right fielder Paulo Orlando. Later in the frame, Jon Mark Owings got aboard on a fielder's choice. Then, Phillip Britton and Randy Gress combined to connect on back-to-back RBI singles.

The Pelicans 2-0 lead stood up as starter Cole Rohrbough threw a seven-inning two hit shutout. He also fanned four and did not allow a single walk.

In the two games combined, the Blue Rocks managed just seven total hits against Diamond and Rohrbough.

The Pelicans and the Blue Rocks play the series finale on Wednesday, August 27th at 7:05 p.m. RHP Ryne Reynoso (10-6, 3.15) makes the start for Myrtle Beach, while RHP Everett Teaford (8-6, 3.83) takes the ball for Wilmington.
