Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, used two homeruns to take down the Frederick Keys, 8-6, Wednesday at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Birds wasted no time jumping on the board, scoring three runs in the first off Keys starter Kyle Simon. All three runs were unearned after Jared Hoying reached on an error by third baseman Michael Mosby. The miscue sent Cafe Martinez, aboard with a single, to third base. Martinez would score on a groundout by Christian Villanueva for a 1-0 lead. Brett Nicholas then homered to right-center for a 3-0 advantage.

Myrtle Beach jumped the lead to 6-0 in the fifth when Jake Skole grounded into a fielder's choice where no out was recorded. Nicholas came home on the play, sliding ahead of a tag from catcher Justin Dalles. Santiago Chirino then blasted a two-run homer to left.

Frederick battled back against the Pelican bullpen. The Keys, between the fifth and eighth innings, scored six runs off reliever Jose Monegro, with first baseman Aaron Baker doing the most damage. Baker blasted a solo homerun in the eighth and had a bases loaded double in the sixth.

The comeback was too little for Frederick, however. The Pelicans scored what turned out to be the decisive runs in the fifth. Nicholas executed a sac fly and Tomas Telis doubled to plate the final Pelicans runs. All eight runs were charged to Simon.

Monegro earned the win, going three and third in relief. Randy Henry was excellent in his second career start. The righty went four innings, allowing only two hits. Henry struck out three.

Myrtle Beach finishes the first half at home over the next four days with the Potomac Nationals. First pitch Thursday is at 7:05 with Thirsty Thursday specials in effect from 6-8pm. Bud and Bud Light drafts will be available during those hours for just $1. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call 843-918-6000 or call MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
