Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (June 13, 2012) - The Dash took two games from Potomac Wednesday night, winning 6-5 in game one and 5-3 in the nightcap. Winston-Salem improved to 6-0 at home against the Nationals on the season. The Dash's magic number to win the Southern Division's first half championship is down to two.
Tuesday night's suspended game resumed in the fourth inning. Trayce Thompson led off the frame and promptly crushed his ninth home run of the season over the center field wall for a 2-1 lead.
Winston-Salem (41-24) added two runs in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie. Brady Shoemaker smacked a single through the right side to score Marcus Semien and push Carlos Sanchez to third. Sanchez came home on a Dan Black fly out to right field. A Semien RBI single in the sixth extended the lead to 5-2.
Potomac (29-37) rallied with three runs in the eighth to tie the game. With two outs David Freitas, Zach Walters and Justin Bloxom each drove in a run to knot the game 5-5.
The tie was broken for the final time in the bottom of the inning. Juan Silverio pulled a fastball over the left field wall for his second home run of the season and a 6-5 Dash lead. Chris Bassitt set down the side in the ninth to record his second save and give Winston-Salem its sixth last at-bat win of the season.
Game two was scoreless until the third inning when the Dash sent eight men to the plate and put four runs on the board. Semien singled with one out to score Daniel Wagner for the first run of the game. Sanchez followed suit with a triple to plate Semien and Miguel Gonzalez. The final run of the inning came on an RBI double off the bat of Shoemaker.
The Nationals rallied to cut the deficit to a run. With the bases loaded and one out, Blake Kelso grounded into a fielder's choice that plated two Potomac runners after a subsequent throwing error. Justin Bloxom added his league-leading 12th home run of the season in the sixth to make it a 4-3 game.
Trayce Thompson put an insurance run on the board with a monstrous blast to left field for a 5-3 lead.
The Dash finish the first half of the season on the road with a four-game series beginning Thursday night in Wilmington. Right-hander Justin Collop (6-1, 4.30 ERA) takes the mound for Winston. The Blue Rocks send righty Jason Adam (1-9, 3.78 ERA) to the hill. With a win and a Salem loss against Carolina, the Dash would take the division crown.
Winston-Salem hosts the 2012 California-Carolina League All-Star Game Tuesday night at 7:15. For tickets and more information call (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
