Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
STRUGGLING TO THE FINISH LINE: The Wilmington Blue Rocks returned home Monday to finish out the first half on a good note. They did not get off to the start they wanted as they were shut out for the second time in as many days by a final mark of 8-0 against the Salem Red Sox at Frawley Stadium.
'CATS CLINCH: Without even playing a game last night, the Blue Rocks saw their faint playoff pulse flatline. With a doubleheader sweep of the Carolina Mudcats, the Lynchburg Hillcats clinched the first-half crown in the Northern Division. Wilmington has not made the playoffs since the 2010 season. It had never gone consecutive years without a playoff appearance but now must perform in the second half to avoid a three-year postseason drought.
THREE - THE MAGIC NUMBER: Wilmington has been held to three runs or less in 17 of its last 19 games and in 40 of its 64 on the year. Over the greater span, the team is 10-30 when held to three or less and 18-6 when plating four plus.
A LONG, LONG TIME AGO...: The Blue Rocks have now been shut out for 24 consecutive innings, continuing a season-high mark. They were blanked for the last six frames of Saturday's game with Winston-Salem before being shut out in their last two. This is the franchise's longest span of innings without a run since going 25.2 scoreless frames from July 25-27, 2006 when it was a Red Sox satellite.
BAGELS?: With no runs on three hits for two consecutive days, the Blue Rocks were shut out for the eighth time on the season and in back-to-back games for the first time all year. The Rocks were shut out six times in the first 41 games. Wilmington then pitched five shutouts without eating a bagel until Sunday evening's game in Winston-Salem and Monday's opener against Salem.
SUBMERGED: Monday's loss is the 36th of the first half for the Wilmington Blue Rocks. It guarantees a non-winning first stanza for the club. The Blue Rocks had not finished a first half with a losing record since 2010 when they posted a 32-38 record to finish nine games behind Frederick.
SLOW YOUR ROLL (DOWNHILL): The Blue Rocks have now lost six games in a row for the first time all season. They lost the final two games of a four-game set with the Carolina Mudcats from June 6-7 before being swept over the weekend by Winston-Salem. Wilmington has not lost seven in a row since dropping exactly that many from May 1-7, 2010. The team's last eight-game skid came from June 24-July 4, 2005 en route to the worst season in team history (60-80).
JUST A BIT OUTSIDE: The 12 walks dished out by Wilmington pitching set a season-high mark for the year. The previous high was six which was done three times already this year, with the most recent coming against these Red Sox back on May 2 at Frawley. Tyler Sample walked five, Cole White handed out four freebies and Edwin Carl put on a trio. The five by Sample set a season-high individually, as he had walked four batters in three different games this year.
UNDER THERE: The 2012 Blue Rocks hit their low-water mark on Monday, falling to eight games under .500. Wilmington has not been this many games below sea level since it was 64-72 in the late stage of last season.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE: The starters in the last two games, Sugar Ray Marimon and Tyler Sample, both failed to register a strikeout...Monday's contest ended a five-game streak of Wilmington pitching allowing 10+ hits in a game...The staff gave up 59 hits in that time and all five affairs were losses...The Rocks last posted five consecutive games of allowing 10+ hits in 2011 from July 14-20 in three games apiece versus Frederick and Myrtle Beach...They lost five of those six...Wilmington's offense has logged double-digit knocks just three times of its last 27 games since posting a season-best 15 in a 5-4 loss at Lynchburg on May 14.
