Pelicans Lose Second Straight Tight Contest

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (27-16), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, dropped their second straight game Sunday, dropping a 2-1 decision against the Wilmington Blue Rocks (20-23) at Frawley Stadium. The first place Pelicans lost two of three against Wilmington and finished 3-3 on the six-game road swing.

Justin Trapp broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with his third home run of the season. Neither team scored the rest of the way in the Pelicans second straight one-run loss.

Right-hander Luke Jackson (4-3) worked five innings for the Pelicans and allowed two earned runs on three hits in a losing effort. Jackson tallied six strikeouts and walked three. Lefty Sam Selman (2-3) earned the win, allowing one earned run on three hits over five innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked just one. With the Pelicans threatening in the ninth inning, Andrew Triggs earned his third save by getting Edwin Garcia to ground out, stranding the tying and go ahead runs in scoring position.

The Pelicans took the early lead on a two-out, two-strike RBI base hit from Garcia in the second inning. Chris Grayson scored the run following a leadoff triple. The Blue Rocks tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a 6-4-3 double play from Kenny Diekroeger.

The Birds finished the game 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The Pelicans stranded a pair of runners in the first and second innings. They put runners on the corners with nobody out in the eighth inning, but did not score. Scott Alexander struck out Rougned Odor and got Trever Adams to hit into an inning-ending double play. Alexander again got into trouble in the ninth inning following two-out singles from Patrick Cantwell and Jake Skole, but Triggs came in to seal the deal.

The Blue Rock had runners on first and second in the sixth inning and Cantwell threw out Daniel Mateo trying to steal third to end the inning. Cantwell extended his team-leading hitting streak to 10 games.

Francisco Mendoza worked a scoreless seventh inning and struck out the side. Left-hander Will Lamb and Ryan Harvey also worked scoreless innings. After a pair of walks, Harvey got Diekroeger to hit into a 1-2-3 twin-killing.

The Pelicans will seek their tenth straight home victory on Tuesday, May 21st when the Carolina Mudcats, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, come to TicketReturn.com Field to begin a three-game series. Left-hander Victor Payano (4-2, 3.83) will take on Carolina's right-hander Jacob Lee (0-4, 5.87).
