Pensacola Pelicans News Release
Pensacola is one win away from advancing to the American Association Championship Series after defeating the Cats Friday night 12-4. Kieran Mattison earned the win to improve to 3-0 as a Pelican, and the Pelicans used a five-run second inning to jump ahead and never lost the lead.
The Cats actually threatened early, putting Fryer at second and Blair at first to start the top of the first inning, but Fryer was caught at third on a double-steal, and the Cats never regained their momentum.
Chase Burch led off the bottom of the second for the Pelicans with a walk. Marcos Rodriguez drew a base on balls as well, and Lou Palmisano drove in Burch with a double. Adam Darby knocked in Rodriguez with a single and then stole second base. Francisco Leandro walked, and Kevin Reynolds scored Palmisano with a sacrifice fly. Leandro and Darby came home on an error by the shortstop, and the Pelicans had a five-run lead.
The Pelicans added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Palmisano had a single for his second hit of the night and scored on a RBI base hit by Reynolds. Pensacola struck again in the fifth inning after a Chase Burch walk. Marcos Rodriguez singled, and Burch headed for third. The third baseman stepped up to field the throw, giving Burch the bag, and fired to second base when he saw Rodriguez headed there. The throw was errant, however, and landed in right field, allowing both Burch and Rodriguez to score. 8-0 Pensacola.
Kevin Reynolds hit a double with one out in the bottom of the sixth, scoring when Marshall McDougall singled. Two more runs scored in the seventh when Rodriguez doubled and Christison went deep to left for his second home run of the postseason.
After two runs scored in the top of the eighth for the Cats, the Pelicans added their last run in the bottom of the inning. Jason Diaz walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and was forced in when Christison walked with the bases loaded.
The Cats tried to make the game interesting in the top of the ninth, but managed just two runs, making the final 12-4 in favor of Pensacola.
Kieran Mattison pitched six innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits and four walks, striking out six. Tyler Wilson pitched a scoreless seventh, giving up just a hit but recording a strikeout in the process. Ulysses Roque allowed two runs on one hit and three walks in the eighth inning, and Kevin Cooper tossed the ninth, yielding two runs on as many hits and notching a strikeout.
Kevin Reynolds and Marcos Rodriguez went 3-4, and Lou Palmisano went 2-3. Dallas Christison went deep, driving in three runs altogether. Chase Burch scored twice, going 1-2.
The Pelicans lead the best-of-five South Division Championship Series two games to one, with game four scheduled for Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in Pensacola. The game is slated for a rematch of Tuesday's starters, with Pensacola tossing Aaron Jackson against Lee Gwaltney of Fort Worth. Tickets are available online at www.pensacolapelicans.com, via phone at (850) 934-8444, or in person at the Box Office of Pelican Park, located on the campus of the University of West Florida.
