July 23, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
- LHP Robbie Ross (9-3, 2.33) at LHP Nick Haughian (7-4, 3.75)
- NO BAGEL, NO BAGEL, NO BAGEL...: With starter Barret Loux on the mound, the Pelicans' offense has endured a bizarre slump. Friday night's 2-0 loss to Frederick marked the third time Myrtle Beach has been shut out in Loux's last five starts dating back to a 1-0 loss to the Kinston Indians on June 30. Over those three shutout starts, the big righty from Texas A&M has allowed just five earned runs over 18.1 innings pitched (2.45 ERA) and has struck out 32 batters against five walks. The Pelicans have batted a combined .188 (18-for-96) in their three whitewash losses.
WHERE'S WOODY': Pelicans manager Jason Wood isn't with the club for this three-game swing to Frederick and for good reason. Tonight in Albuquerque, New Mexico, "Woody" will be inducted into the Albuquerque Professional Baseball Hall of Fame. According to Albuquerquebaseball.com, "Wood becomes the first Isotopes player to receive the Albuquerque Professional Baseball Hall of Fame honor after essentially being the face of the franchise from 2003-2006, and 2008. Over five seasons, Wood set modern Albuquerque baseball records in games (587), at-bats (2,087), RBI (328) and total bases (588). Wood was selected as team Most Valuable Player by vote of his teammates in 2003, 2005, and 2006." Jason, his wife Sissy, and their three daughters will all be in attendance tonight at Isotopes Park. The Birds' skipper will be inducted along with former Albuquerque Dukes pitcher Ted Power and the late former Dukes first baseman Brian Traxler.
BACK ON TRACK: Jared Bolden was held to merely one hit Thursday night, and lately that qualifies as shutting him down. The reigning Carolina League Player of the Week ran up a streak of eight straight contests with multiple hits before it was snapped last night. During the streak he was 21-for-39 (.538) with four homers, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored. Batting .247 on July 1, the Lynchburg, VA native has hit .478 (32-67) over his last 17 games to raise his average 56 points and soar to third on the Carolina League leaderboard, first among active players, with a .303 mark. Bolden got back on the multi-hit track in the opener at Frederick, posting two hits in four at bats.
