Frederick Keys News Release

For second straight evening in Frederick, the Keys blanked the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. LHP Nick Haughian tossed his first career complete game shutout as Frederick topped Myrtle Beach, 1-0, on Saturday night. Steve Bumbry's RBI single in the bottom of eighth was the lone run scored in the contest. LHP Robbie Ross was on the wrong end of the pitcher's duel at Harry Grove Stadium. Ross threw his first career complete game but picked up the tough luck loss.

Through the first six innings on Saturday, inning-ending double plays started to become a theme. In the top of the first, Haughian forced CF Ryan Strausborger to hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the frame. 2B Andres James rolled into 4-6-3 inning ending double play in the top of the third and Robbie Ross joined the fun in the home half of the fourth when CF Miguel Abreu grounded into a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning. In the fifth, the double play duo of Jonathan Schoop and Manny Machado made an incredible play up the middle to end the inning. With DH Travis Adair at first, 3B Santiago Chrino hit a hard ground ball up the middle. Schoop ranged to his right and made a diving stop. He quickly flipped to Machado for the first out. With little time to spare, Machado fired to first to finish off the spectacular double play.

Ross and Haughian continued to retire hitter after hitter as the game entered the bottom of the eighth without a run on the board. C Brian Ward led off the frame with a double to left-center. After Ross struck out DH Kipp Schutz, LF Bobby Stevens stepped to plate. Stevens hit a comebacker to Ross. He fielded it and caught Ward napping off second. Ward wisely got caught in a run down that allowed Stevens to advance to second before the Keys catcher was tagged out. With a runner still in scoring position, Steve Bumbry singled home Stevens for the first run of the game.

That one run was enough for Haughian. He retired C Vinny DiFazio and 2B Andres James quickly in the ninth for the first two outs of the inning. After a single by SS Leury Garcia, 1B Jared Bolden grounded out to second to end the game.

Haughian threw just 85 pitches en route to his first career complete game shutout. He scattered three hits, walked one, and struck out one in the game. In six starts since the All-Star break, the Marysville, WA native is 5-0 with an ERA of 1.55.

Saturday night's game was played in a crisp 1 hour and 46 minutes. It was the shortest nine-inning Keys' game in 2011 and second shortest nine-inning contest in franchise history. The shortest game came on June 2, 2002 in Myrtle Beach (1:45).

Frederick will try to sweep the three-game set from the Pelicans on Sunday evening. The Keys will turn to RHP Bobby Bundy (9-5, 3.11) while Myrtle Beach will send LHP Miguel De Los Santos (2-1, 3.27). First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Sunday night is Christmas Eve in July at ballpark. Fans can take pictures with Santa Claus throughout the night and enjoy a Christmas feast in the Picnic Pavilion for just $10. To purchase tickets, contact the Keys box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkes.com.
