CarL1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Keys Blank Pelicans for Second Straight Night

July 23, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

FREDERICK, MD - A Pelicans offense that outscored its opponents 49-27 in seven wins on an eight-game homestand last week suddenly finds itself searching for answers. Frederick's Nick Haughian tossed a complete-game shutout, and Steve Bumbry's eighth-inning RBI single was enough as the Keys handed Myrtle Beach its second straight shutout loss, 1-0 Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium.

The Pelicans got an outstanding pitching performance from their starter for the second night in a row in this brief three-game trip north. Like Barret Loux a night before, Pelicans lefty Robbie Ross stifled Frederick's bats for his evening, being credited with a complete game while tossing eight innings of one-run ball in the loss. Ross (9-4) struck out six against one walk and scattered five hits. The only inning on the night in which either team had multiple knocks was the one that doomed him.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, Frederick got a leadoff double by Brian Ward who, after a strikeout of Kipp Schutz, was cut down on a 1-6-5 putout between second and third on a groundball back to Ross. Bobby Stevens, who rapped the grounder, moved into second behind Ward on the rundown, and one batter later, Bumbry drove him in with a single to left-center. The right fielder's knock was Frederick's first hit in seven at-bats with a man in scoring position on the night. It was enough.

Haughian dominated the Pelicans' suddenly anemic road offense. Frederick's southpaw faced just two over the minimum on the night and didn't allow multiple baserunners on at any point. The lefty didn't allow a hit until Travis Adair's one-out single in the fifth and got three double plays from his defense to help out. Haughian (8-4) tossed 85 pitches in his first career complete-game shutout and faced just six total baserunners, striking out one man, walking one, and hitting one with a pitch.

Not a single Pelican reached scoring position on the night. Myrtle Beach's offense has now not scored a run since its four-run seventh in a 7-5 Thursday night victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Since that frame, the Pelicans have gone a combined 8-for-61 (.131) as a team and have not put a single runner past second base. The defeat marked the first time the Pelicans have been blanked in back-to-back games since defeats of 8-0 and 4-0 at Potomac on May 5 and 6 of last season. This year, the Pelicans are batting .289 at the friendly confines of BB&T Coastal Field versus a .245 team average on the road.

Saturday's middle game was an unusually brief one. The Pelicans and Keys took just an hour and 46 minutes to complete Frederick's 1-0 win.

Myrtle Beach looks to avoid the series sweep Sunday evening in the finale of this three-game series. The Pelicans will send southpaw Miguel De Los Santos (2-1, 3.27) against Carolina League All-Star Bobby Bundy (9-5, 3.11) with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium.

Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
