Pelicans Game Notes

July 19, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

RHP Elisaul Pimentel (5-6, 3.72) at LHP Miguel De Los Santos (2-1, 2.25)

PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF: Jared Bolden earned well-deserved Carolina League Player of the Week honors on Monday and last night he celebrated with another multiple-hit game. The lefty went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored in the Pelicans' blowout win. Bolden has multiple hits in his last six games, going 16-for-29 (.552) with four homers, 11 RBIs and nine runs scored. Batting .247 on July 1, the Lynchburg, VA native has hit .471 (24-51) over his last 13 games to raise his average 46 points and soar to fourth on the Carolina League leaderboard with a .293 mark.

ANYTHING YOU CAN DO...: In the fifth inning last night, Leury Garcia hit his third home run of the season, a long fly over the bleachers in left field. Jared Bolden was up next and he crushed a towering shot out to right-center field for the Pelicans' first back-to-back jacks of 2011. The last time the Birds hit consecutive home runs was in Potomac on August 14, 2010, when Cody Johnson and Samuel Sime went back-to-back in the eighth inning. The Pelicans hadn't hit consecutive home runs at BB&T Coastal Field since July 5, 2009 when Johnson and Donell Linares went deep in the fifth inning against Salem.

LIVE THE LIFE OF A ROSS PLAYER: Robbie Ross cruised through seven innings to pick up the win last night, his ninth of the season to move into a second-place tie on the league leaderboard with Frederick's Bobby Bundy, who tossed a complete game last night to also record his ninth win. Both men trail Bundy's Frederick teammate Nathan Moreau, who has ten wins. With last night's gem, Ross lowered his ERA to 2.33, fourth-lowest in the loop. He's posted the fifth-best WHIP (1.10) while proving to be among the most durable hurlers in the circuit, throwing 108.1 innings to rank third in that category. Not regarded as a strikeout pitcher, Ross has run his total up to 85 to move into the league's top ten.

THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: One key to the Birds' five-game winning streak has been strong performances out of the bullpen. Over the last four games, eight Myrtle Beach relievers have combined to toss 15 and one-third scoreless innings. Joe Ortiz and the now promoted Johan Yan picked up two outs apiece to close out Thursday's win. On Friday, Ryan Kelly's three shutout frames and Zach Osborne's two opened the door for a comeback. Saturday brought seven scoreless innings, four from Kennil Gomez, one and two thirds from Chad Bell and one and a third from Ryan Rodebaugh in his first victory as a Pelican. Last night it was Kasey Kiker, who posted two zeroes to close out the win.

HUGE TURNAROUND: Both Jared Bolden and Jared Prince were mired in brutal slumps to begin the 2011 season, and both have recovered remarkably to rank in the CL's top ten in batting average. Bolden started 2-for-32 (.063), but has hit .327 since to raise his average to a .293 clip that is now the fourth-best in the Carolina League. Prince was in a 2-for-34 hole (.059) before raising his average to .284, ranking eighth in the loop. Prince also moved past Frederick outfielder Steven Bumbry for the league lead in on base percentage at .384.
