Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Game notes for tonight's second game of four between the Pelicans (17-10) and Red Sox (18-7) at Salem Memorial Ballpark (7:05 p.m.) are attached.

- LHP Robbie Erlin (2-0, 2.48) at LHP Chris Hernandez (2-1, 2.75)

[INFIELD] SINGLED OUT: For the second time in four games, the Pelicans dropped a series opener on an infield single. In the tenth on Thursday, the Red Sox mounted their charge with two gone against Pelicans reliever Trevor Hurley. Gibson walked on four pitches and stole second, and Gentile, in the mix again as he was in Salem's game-tying ninth, hit a slow roller to the first-base side of the pitcher's mound. A miscommunication between Hurley and Hillgoss left the pitcher struggling to field the ball, and his gloved flip went wide of first baseman Mitch Hilligoss, allowing Gibson to score the game-winning run also from second base on an infield single. The Pelicans also lost on an infield single Monday night at Potomac when Destin Hood brought home Chris Curran from third on a ball hit to short for a 3-2 win.

THIEVERY GONE WRONG: The Pelicans are in the middle of a massive slump on the basepaths trying to take extra bags. With two more players thrown out trying to steal second base last night by Dan Butler, the Pelicans have now been caught stealing in their last eight attempts dating back to April 29th. Ryan Strausborger's pilfer of second in the bottom of the third inning of that day's affair against the Frederick Keys is Myrtle Beach's last successful steal attempt. The Pelicans have also had a runner picked off in that span (Mitch Hilligoss, picked off 2nd base by Frederick catcher Luis Bernardo on April 30).

THIRSTY THURSDAYS: Myrtle Beach's solid start to the 2011 campaign has been good for the Pelicans in any day that isn't Thursday. Last night's series-opening loss to the Red Sox made Myrtle Beach 0-for-4 on Thursdays this season. Following the work week's fourth day, however, the Pelicans are tremendous on weekends, going 3-1 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in 2011.

SINGING THE BLUES: After a red-hot start in their alternate Pelican Blue tops this season, the Birds have faltered in their third jerseys. Myrtle Beach started the year 5-0 in the alternates, but the Birds have since lost five of their last seven times out wearing their powder blue duds. The Pelicans dropped the series opener at Potomac in their alternate unis before rebounding to destroy the Nationals by a 20-6 score on Tuesday and claim the series victory with a 3-0 shutout win on Wednesday in their road gray tops. A late arrival into Salem on Wednesday night/Thursday morning meant laundry for the traditional road jerseys and another date with the blues, however, and the Red Sox took the series opener 4-3 in odd fashion.
