Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Jared Mitchell's three-run home run opened up a four-run Dash lead in the fifth inning, and Winston-Salem held off a Lynchburg rally to win 6-5. A sellout crowd of 6,274 at BB&T Ballpark witnessed the first win of the home stand Friday night.

Lynchburg (10-16) got on the board two batters into the ballgame. Todd Cunningham walked to lead off the game. With Andrelton Simmons batting, Dash starter Andre Rienzo tried to pick off Cunningham at first base, but threw the ball away, allowing Cunningham to advance to third on the error. Simmons then singled to right to drive in the game's first run.

The Dash (10-18) responded with two outs in the second. Andy Wilkins singled with one out in the inning, and Luis Sierra followed that by drawing a walk. Kyle Shelton then struck out before Nick Ciolli tripled in the two runners, putting the Dash on top 2-1.

Both teams went back-and-forth in the third inning. The Hillcats plated the equalizer when Cunningham singled and then moved to third on a single by Simmons. Phil Gosselin followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Cunningham.

Winston scored in the bottom of the inning, again with two outs. Daniel Wagner singled to start the inning, then stole second, and advanced to third on Jose Martinez's groundout. Mitchell then struck out, and with Ian Gac batting, Wagner scored on a wild pitch to give the Dash a 3-2 lead.

In the seventh, Austin Yount led off with a single which Wagner followed with a bunt single. Martinez then sacrificed the runners into scoring position before Mitchell belted a three-run shot to open up a four-run lead.

The Cats pulled within two on home runs in the seventh by Braeden Schlehuber and in the eighth off the bat of Joey Terdoslavich. The long ball by Terdoslavich tied Gac for the Carolina League-lead in home runs with eight.

Lynchburg plated one run in the ninth after L.V. Ware singled and then scored on Schlehuber's double. With the tying run at second, Brandon Kloess relieved Orlando Santos and retired the next three batters to give Winston-Salem the win.

Rienzo (1-0) picked up his first win and first decision of the season after throwing five innings and allowing two runs, one earned. Zeke Spruill (1-3) got the loss after giving up six runs, all earned, through six innings. Kloess came in with none out and set down the Hillcats to earn his third save in as many chances.

Winston-Salem and Lynchburg play game three of the series Saturday night at 7 p.m. LHP Hector Santiago (0-2, 4.88) pitches for the Dash against RHP Cory Rasmus (0-2, 4.82). Rasmus is expected to throw two innings and give way for LHP Chris Masters (3-0, 1.11).
