Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach Pelicans (12-9) vs. Salem Avalanche (10-10)
Friday, April 25 -- 7:05 PM
BB&T Coastal Field -- Myrtle Beach, SC
Game #22, Home Game #11
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans aim for a series win in tonight's middle game with the Salem Avalanche. Myrtle Beach will also attempt to extend a three-game winning streak, and a victory would give them their longest string of the season. The Pelicans set a new season-high for runs in a single game in last night's 13-1 triumph. They also matched the high-water mark for individual game hits with 12.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: Right-hander Deunte Heath makes his fifth overall start and second at home for Myrtle Beach. He will be opposed by left-hander Polin Trinidad, making his fifth start of the season and second on the road. Both hurlers enter the match up with ERAs under 2.00 (Heath - 1.50, Trinidad - 1.88)
Heath: Has won three times in four outings, and carries a personal three-game winning decision streak into his second home start. His last time out, Heath beat the Kinston Indians at Historic Grainger Stadium. The righty turned in six strong innings, permitting just two earned runs on six hits. The victory was improbable as he struggled with his command and walked a season-high six, while striking out none. Prior to his start, Heath is second in the Carolina League behind only teammate Tommy Hanson (29.0) in innings pitched (24.0) and leads the loop in walks (15). He currently resides eighth in the league with his 1.50 ERA, one spot above his mound counterpart tonight.
The Atlanta-native and Tennessee Volunteer spent the 2007 season between Rome (A) and Myrtle Beach (A)
Trinidad: Has turned in four strong starts thus far, including his finest his last time out. The Dominican-born left-hander blanked the Lynchburg Hillcats at home for seven innings, conceding just four base hits and striking out four.
Signed as a free agent in 2002, the 23-year old led the low class-A Lexington Legends in strike outs in 2007 with 120 while posting a 6-8 record and 4.18 ERA. He joined the Avalanche for four starts at the tail end of the season (2-1, 2.81)
HERNANDEZ HURT: CF Gorkys Hernandez suffered a hamstring injury in the bottom of the eighth inning of Wednesday night's game against Lynchburg as he turned around second base heading towards third. He left the game with the help of Trainer Greg Hall. Hernandez is expected to miss 2-3 weeks.
HICKS HEALTHY: Pelicans shortstop Brandon Hicks returned to the starting lineup on April 22nd after nearly 11 days away. Hicks was battling a nagging quadricep injury. The last time he had played was on April 11th (home opener). Hicks has wasted no time establishing himself as a force in the two-hole, going 6-for-11 since his return with two home runs, five RBIs, and five runs scored. Hicks is rated by Baseball America as the 14th best prospect in the Braves' organization.
MMM...BUT NO BOP: Right-hander Tommy Hanson has been the most dominant pitcher in the Carolina League through his first five starts. His historic run continued last night as he worked seven innings of one-run ball, conceding just four hits to win for the third time (3-0). Hanson currently leads the Carolina League in ERA (0.31) strike outs (38) and innings pitched (29.0). The one run he allowed to Salem was the first earned run he has allowed this season, and snapped his personal streak at 28 1/3 innings. The 21-year old has permitted just nine hits this season. Hanson was named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for each of the first two weeks season.
