Potomac Nationals News Release

FREDERICK, MD. - In a game that featured two of the top pitchers in the Carolina League facing one another, Jake Arrieta outlasted Jordan Zimmermann as Frederick beat Potomac 5-2 Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium.

Arrieta (2-0), making his fifth start of the season hurled six strong innings, taming the Carolina League's highest scoring offense by allowing only two runs. The 22-year-old retired the first six hitters he faced in route to a six-strikeout, five-walk outing.

The Nationals however, struck first off of Arrieta when Marvin Lowrance launched an opposite field home run to lead off the top of the third inning for his second big fly of the year. It was the first home run Arrieta had allowed all season.

The P-Nats extended their lead in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Leonard Davis and Edgardo Baez drew back-to-back walks. Lowrance, who accounted for both RBI hit a run-scoring single to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Jordan Zimmermann (2-1), who was making his third start, began the game strongly by retiring the minimum through 4 2/3 innings. The 21-year-old though, continues to experience the learning curve as he pitched himself into trouble. With two outs and the bases empty in the fifth inning, Zimmermann walked Billy Rowell. Brandon Snyder proceeded to hit a game-tying two-run homer over the right field wall.

Frederick continued the offensive surge as they ultimately responded with five unanswered runs. The Keys took the lead for good in the sixth inning. Frederick pounded four consecutive hits yielding two runs as Zimmermann was knocked out of the game after 5 2/3 innings. The Wisconsin native surrendered four runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one. Jack Spradlin relieved the right-hander but Frederick stormed ahead for a 4-2 advantage.

The Nationals offense could not respond as they mustered just two hits in the final five frames. Jason Burch pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.

Potomac's lead in the Northern Division shrunk to 1 ½ games after the loss. The two teams will play game two of the three-game series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium. Adrian Alaniz (1-0, 3.60), who is coming off of his first career win as a National is scheduled to face Kyle Schmidt (1-0, 5.40).
