LAST TIME OUT: Picking up a rain-suspended game in the bottom of the fifth down 1-0, the Pelicans failed to score before a five-run eighth inning, toppling Salem 5-1...JEIMER CANDELARIO laced a three-run triple to put the Birds ahead after a game-tying hit from MARK ZAGUNIS...JAMES PUGLIESE and JASVIR RAKKAR combined to silence the Red Sox hitters over the final four innings of the game...In "game two" Myrtle Beach was blanked for the seventh time this season, as Teddy Stankiewicz tossed a complete game shutout in seven innings, matching a career-best nine strikeouts...He did not walk a hitter and surrendered just three hits, facing one over the minimum.
WELCOME TO PARADISE: A bevy of recent player promotions has given the Pelicans a new breath of life in the last week to help the club end a five-game losing slide. Coming at a time when seven players are on the disabled list, the additions of catcher CAEL BROCKMEYER, and pitchers JEREMY NULL and DAVID GARNER, have proven fruitful for the team. Brockmeyer, who earned his call up to Double-A on Saturday, spent a week with the Birds and batted just .083, but helped drive in three runs in three different wins. In the continuation of Thursday's suspended game, Brockmeyer drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly as part of a 5-run comeback rally, and the day before that, he hit a game-tying sac fly in the series opener against Salem. Prior to that win, he drove in a run in the series finale against Winston-Salem as part of a rally that tied the game before the Pelicans went on to win as well. Null's first start with the team ended in a no decision, but the Pelicans won the game. The right-hander struck out four while allowing four earned runs in five innings of work in his High-A debut. Garner won his first game in his first appearance with the team, firing three innings and allowing just one unearned run on four hits on July 1.
HE'S THE BEST AROUND (OF JUNE): The Chicago Cubs announced on Friday that Myrtle Beach Pelicans outfielder MARK ZAGUNIS has been named the Cubs Minor League Player of the Month for the month of June. The 22-year-old led Cubs farmhands in runs (23), on-base percentage (.448), and slugging (.538). He hit 326 (31-for-95) during the month in 26 games, scoring 23 runs, smacking six doubles, a triple, and four home runs. He led all Cubs minor leaguers in on-base percentage (.448), slugging (.538), OPS (.986), and runs scored. He was also among the top five in the system in batting average (4th), extra-base hits (3rd), home runs (2nd), RBI (4th), walks (T-3rd), and was hit seven times, second most in the minors. The Pelicans leadoff man also stole four bases in eight attempts during June. This award adds to Zagunis' impressive pile from this season, including Carolina League Player of the Week for the week of June 15-21 and a Carolina League Midseason All-Star selection.
I NEED MORE POWER: While the Pelicans offense has broken out for 21 runs in the last four games, they have not homered during the run. The last Pelicans home run came on Friday, June 26. The seven-game homerless stretch for the team is the longest of the season, surpassing a six-game stretch from the second game of the season until April 18, a stretch of six games. When the Pelicans hit a home run, they are 20-4.
SHAKE AND BAKE: The Pelicans made another roster move today, promoting C/1B CAEL BROCKMEYER to Double-A Tennessee and adding RHP DAVE BERG from Class A-Short Season Euguene. Brockmeyer was the club for less than a week, going 1-for-12 with three RBI. Berg is one of the most accomplished college relievers of all time. The Cubs 6th round pick in this year's draft is a two-time first-team All American according to Baseball America, four-time first team All-Pac-12, and two-time NCBWA Stopper of the Year and Pac-12 Pitcher of the year. He made two outings for the Emeralds, retired all ten batters he's faced, including four on strikes, across two outings. No Cubs draft selection from this season has played above Class A-Short Season yet.
PROSPECT 9-PACK: Nine of players on the roster are ranked in the Cubs Top 30 prospects according to MLBPipeline.com's Prospect Watch and seven in Baseball America's Top 30. The balanced roster has four position players and five pitchers ranked: RHPs PAUL BLACKBURN (No. 24 MLB.com/No. 18 Baseball America), JEREMY NULL (28/NR), DAURY TORREZ (22/30), JEN-HO TSENG (8/11), DUANE UNDERWOOD (6/10), catcher VICTOR CARATINI (16/13), 3B JEIMER CANDELARIO (12/24), 2B DANIEL LOCKHART (No. 29/NR), and OF MARK ZAGUNIS (15/15). Baseball America also lauded a handful of Pelicans players with "Best Tools" labels. Caratini is the "Best Defensive Catcher" in the system according to the 2015 Prospect Handbook, CARLOS PENALVER as the "Best Defensive Infielder," Tseng has the "Best Control" and "Best Changeup," Underwood possesses the "Best Fastball," and Zagunis has "Best Strike Zone Discipline." They also list JUAN PANIAGUA as the top "Sleeper" prospect. Outfielders BILLY MCKINNEY (9/6) and JACOB HANNEMANN (21/17, and BA's "Fastest Baserunner,") were on the roster but have since been promoted. ANDREW ELY, named by BA as the "Best Defensive Player" from the Cubs 2014 draft class, was on the club's Opening Day roster but went down to South Bend.
