Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Omar Narvaez's walk-off single in the 11th inning pushed the Dash by the Frederick Keys by a score of 6-5 in front of 8,009 fans, the second-largest crowd in BB&T Ballpark history, on the Fourth of July.
With the score tied at five in the 11th, Jake Peter singled with two outs. Frederick (3-7, 35-45) reliever Williams Louico (2-2) issued back-to-back walks to load the bases for Narvaez, who ripped a 1-2 pitch into right-center to plate Peter and give the Dash (6-3, 36-43) their first walk-off victory of 2015.
The Dash bullpen combined for six innings of one-run ball. Andre Wheeler pitched three innings in relief of Matt Heidenreich, who received a no-decision after surrendering four runs, three earned, in five innings. Wheeler yielded to Michael Ynoa, who went two scoreless frames, before Brad Goldberg (1-1) pitched a scoreless 11th to earn the win.
Winston-Salem jumped out on Frederick starter Luis Gonzalez from the get-go. Gonzalez walked the first two men he faced in Adam Engel and Peter. After a strikeout, Gonzalez served up a missile two-run double to Keon Barnum that put the Dash on top 2-0.
The Keys responded immediately in the top of the second. Wynston Sawyer's triple into the right field corner knotted the game at two. Two batters later, Anthony Caronia's nubber in front of the plate plated Sawyer to give Frederick the 3-2 advantage.
Cleuluis Rondon walked with one out in the bottom of the second and advanced to third on Michael Suiter's single. Suiter was thrown out 1-3-6 on a steal attempt, but Rondon scampered home on the throw to knot the score at three.
The seesaw battle continued in the next frame. Wynns singled in a run in the top of the third before Nolan Earley's RBI double once again deadlocked things at four in the bottom of the inning.
The clubs again traded jabs in the seventh. Frederick took a 5-4 lead on Chance Sisco's RBI single. Engel and Peter each singled off Frederick reliever Jimmy Yacobonis to begin the bottom of the seventh, with the latter extending Peter's hit streak to 16 games.
The Keys brought in reliever Donnie Hart, who walked Trey Michalczewski to load the bases before plunking Barnum to bring in the tying run. However, Hart induced a 1-2-3 double play and another groundout to get out of the threat with the score still knotted at five.
The Dash had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth. Engel led off with a single and advanced to second on Peter's sacrifice bunt. On the second pitch of an intentional walk to Michalczewski, Engel took off for third, making it just ahead of the throw from Wynns, the Keys' catcher. After Frederick reliever Cody Wheeler completed the intentional pass, the southpaw fanned Barnum and Narvaez to escape the threat.
The Dash and Keys continue their three-game set Sunday as James Dykstra (3-5, 3.76 ERA) takes the bump for Winston-Salem against Frederick's Mitch Horacek (4-8, 4.57 ERA). Pregame radio coverage is available at 4:45 p.m., with the first pitch at 5 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
Sunday's contest is a Family Sunday, meaning hot dogs and sodas are just $1 through the end of the second inning. Plus, a few Dash players will be available before the game for autographs. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
