Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - On Monday afternoon at Coastal Federal Field the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (72-68, 37-33) finished up their 2006 season by taking a 5-2 loss in 11 innings at the hands of the Kinston Indians (85-54, 38-31), but that certainly didn't damper the mood as LF Carl Loadenthal became the 2nd Pelican in the history of the franchise to win the Carolina League batting crown. Loadenthal went 1-2, raising his batting average to .323, just three percentage points from the highest average in a single season (Marcus Giles, .326 in 1999).

Kinston took the first lead of the game in the top of the 3rd inning thanks to one big swing of the bat. With one out, 2B Argenis Reyes launched a deep drive over the right field wall, a two-run home run to put the Tribe up 2-0. It was just the second home run of the season for the Kinston second baseman.

The resilient Pelicans fought back in the bottom of the 4th inning and cut the Indians lead in half, 2-1. After back-to-back singles from 1B Mark Jurich and SS Diory Hernandez, DH Clint Sammons blasted an RBI single into left field to put the Pelicans on the board. The base hit extended Sammons hitting streak to six games to close out the season.

In the bottom of the 7th inning the "Fightin' Feathers" struck again and tied the game, 2-2. RF Robert Marcial got things started with a lead-off single. After Marcial's single, 2B J.C. Holt walked to put a pair of runners on. Both runners moved into scoring position when Loadenthal pushed down a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, 3B Van Pope proceeded to hit a sharp grounder to short where Kinston's Chris De La Cruz bobbled the baseball, allowing Marcial to score the tying run.

The two-archrivals battled into extra-innings, extending the life of the 2006 a few more moments. It was in the top of the 11th inning that Kinston effectively ended the season. The Tribe pushed across three runs, highlighted by an RBI double down the left field line from 3B Rodney Choy Foo to crack a 2-2 tie, giving the Indians a 3-2 lead.

Pelicans starter James Parr left a strong impression in the minds of Pelicans fans with a solid seven-inning effort in his last start of the season. Parr held the Indians to just two runs on four hits, walked none and struck out five in a no-decision. Reliever Devin Anderson (L, 1-3) took the loss in an outing that saw him give up three runs on six hits in four innings. Kinston starter Joe Cowley tossed five innings and yielded a run on five hits. Reliever Scott Sumner (W, 1-1) took home the win thanks to three scoreless innings of relief. Closer Scott Roehl (S, 4) logged his 4th save of the season with a perfect 11th.

The Pelicans 2006 season is officially over. Opening Day 2007 is tentatively scheduled for April 5th at 7:02 pm when the Birds kick off the season against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Updates, stories, and features will be made available on the new and improved myrtlebeachpelicans.com throughout the offseason.
