
Nationals finish season on high note

WOODBRIDGE, VA - The Potomac Nationals, on the last day of the 2006 campaign, gathered a walk-off victory over the Winston-Salem Warthogs by a score of 3-2. The Nationals finish the season with a record of 22-19 in one-run games.
The Warthogs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Chris Kelly launched his 20th homerun of the season over the left field wall. Then, Mike Hinckley, the Nationals starter, settled down and went five innings, allowing just the two runs on six hits.
Potomac battled back to tie the game at two apiece with two runs in the fourth inning. With one out, Ian Desmond singled to left center field and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Later, Devin Ivany and was plated on a Dee Brown base hit.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning. Dee Brown got the rally started with a single, his third of the game, to left field. Marvin Lowrance, with one out, walked and then Steve Mortimer came to the dish. He hit a liner to right center and Brown scored the winning run from second base.
Juan Ovalles (6-8) earned the win after throwing a scoreless ninth inning. Fernando Hernandez (7-5) suffered the loss. He went 1.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits.
The Nationals finish this season with a second half record of 31-39 and over played to the tune of a 64-76 season.
