Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Frederick Keys equaled their Wednesday night score one inning into Thursday night's series finale. Yet just when it seemed an offensive showcase was at hand, the affair turned one-sided in front of 3,703 at BB&T Coastal Field.
Frederick capitalized on five Myrtle Beach errors and used some timely hitting to distance themselves in a 7-4 victory, their third in the four-game set. The Keys wasted no time in the first getting on the scoreboard against Pelicans starter Carlos Rivas (0-1). After a leadoff strikeout of Matt Angle, David Cash singled, Tyler Henson walked, and Chris Vinyard singled, bringing Kraig Binick to the plate. The right fielder capitalized on the opportunity, driving a double to the wall in center field that scored Cash and Henson. A Brandon Waring RBI groundout completed the first inning tallies for the Keys.
Myrtle Beach responded in the bottom of the first in similar fashion. After a leadoff strikeout of their own, the Pelicans had two reach with a Michael Fisher double and a Jason Heyward single scoring Fisher from second. Heyward advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Freddie Freeman. The Pelicans' bats, however, would go quiet virtually the rest of the way.
The Keys got one run back in the second as errors started to plague Myrtle Beach. Pedro Florimon reached to lead off the frame on an error charged to third baseman Donell Linares. While stealing second base, Flormion kicked an errant Matt Kennelly throw into left field and used the deflection to advance to third. Kennelly was charged with an error on the throw. Matt Angle's one-out sacrifice fly scored the fourth Frederick run of the evening.
Myrtle Beach committed five total errors on the night with at least one in every inning from the second through fifth. While the Keys only plated one run over that span, Myrtle Beach pitchers worked with traffic on the basepaths for much of the night.
Frederick added another on a Chris Vinyard sacrifice fly in the 6th off of Pelicans reliever Tommy Palica that scored Jason White to make the gap 5-2.
The top of the eighth put the Pelicans away. With two outs, Henson singled and stole second, advancing to third on back-to-back walks issued to Vinyard and Binick. Waring singled, scoring Henson and Vinyard, and Frederick's offensive damage was done. Both runs were charged to Pelicans reliever Craig Kimbrel.
Keys starter Brett Bordes (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory. Rivas took the loss allowing four runs, three earned, over four innings.
Jason Heyward homered off Keys reliever Ryan Ouellette in the bottom of the ninth, driving in Michael Fisher who reached on a dropped third strike, to pull the Birds within three, but the rally bid would die shortly thereafter.
The Pelicans hit the road for the first time Friday with the first of three against the Potomac Nationals at 7:05. Myrtle Beach returns for a weekday three-game set next Monday through Wednesday with the Kinston Indians.
