Pelicans Double up Mudcats to Take Series Lead

ZEBULON, N.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans bashed six doubles on Sunday en route to downing the Carolina Mudcats 6-3 from Five County Stadium.

The extra-base hits started early for the Pelicans (22-28). In the top of the first, Wladimir Galindo bashed an RBI double to make it 1-0, but the Mudcats (25-25) countered with an RBI double of their own in the bottom of the first from Weston Wilson to tie the game.

With two in scoring position in the fourth, Daniel Spingola and Connor Myers came into score for the Pelicans on an error to give them a 3-1 advantage.

The Birds added on in the fifth with three more. After Galindo smashed his second RBI double on the day, Spingola lifted a sacrafice fly to left field to give the Pelicans a 5-1 lead. Myers then smacked an RBI double of his own, his second two-bagger of the game, to make it 6-1.

Tyson Miller (4-4) earned the win, allowing just one run on five hits over five innings while striking out four and walking three.

After Miller exited, Ronnie Gideon hit a solo home run in the sixth and Keston Hiura scored in the seventh on an error to make it 6-3 Myrtle Beach.

Wyatt Short entered in the eighth inning and recorded four outs to earn his third save on the season.

Victor Diaz (2-2) tossed 5.2 innings, but allowed five runs, three earned, in his loss.

The Birds and the Muddies meet Monday for the series finale of the four-game set with a 12 p.m. contest. LHP Bryan Hudson (3-4, 6.42 ERA) is slated to start against Carolina RHP Braden Webb (2-3, 5.06 ERA).
