Pelicans Clinch First Series Win

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans offense stepped on the gas early, and Pelicans starter Richard Sullivan needed no more. The Myrtle Beach left-hander spun a three-hit, complete game shutout in a 6-0 win over the Winston-Salem Dash in front of 3,089 fans at BB&T Coastal Field.

In the teams' second-consecutive morning contest, the Pelicans broke out the bats in the opening two frames. Myrtle Beach cashed in a Robert Marcial single and a Freddie Freeman double on a Cody Johnson groundout and a Donell Linares two-bagger to go up 2-0 after the first. The Pelicans struck again in the second. With Matt Kennelly and Chad Lundahl aboard on back-to-back singles to open the inning, C.J. Lee tripled to the left-center field gap, scoring them both. Lee came home when Cole Miles singled for the fourth straight hit to open the inning before Dash starter Levi Maxwell retired the next three in order to stop the bleeding. Maxwell again failed to crack the win column, falling to 0-8 on the year.

The story of the day was Sullivan (2-1). Making his fifth start of the year in a Pelicans uniform, the left-hander cruised through the afternoon en route to a complete game shutout, his first in Myrtle Beach. He faced just one over the minimum through three innings and didn't allow a hit until the fourth. Sullivan got help from his defense at every turn, as exemplified in the seventh. Winston-Salem's Lee Cruz got caught trying to take the extra base on a double in that frame. After roping a line drive down the left field line, the ball got by Pelicans left fielder Cole Miles and scooted out away from the left field corner. But Miles and shortstop Chad Lundahl connected with third baseman Donell Linares on the relay to gun down Cruz trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

It was that kind of day for Sullivan as the Dash only got one other runner to second base and only put multiple runners on the basepaths at the same time once. The Louisville, Kentucky native struck out nine against just two walks and got Salvador Sanchez swinging to put the exclamation point on the day. Sullivan's effort marked the first time a Pelicans pitcher had thrown a nine-inning complete game shutout since James Parr did it against Wilmington on May 17, 2007.

The win marked Myrtle Beach's first series victory of the season. The Pelicans can complete their first series sweep of the 2009 season and again go for their first three-game winning streak of the year tomorrow night against the Dash in the three-game series finale at 7:05. Lefty Cole Rohrbough (2-1, 2.00) goes for the Pelicans against right-hander Johnnie Lowe (2-1, 5.11) for Winston-Salem. Tickets are available for the finale by contacting the Pelicans box office at (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
