Kinston Sweep Short Series with Wednesday Wins

Potomac Nationals News Release

WOODBRIDGE, Va- There are few things that are certain in this life. Death? Sure. Taxes? Definitely. If you avidly follow the P-Nats, however, you can count on white knuckles, gnawed fingernails, and a tightly-played contest when Potomac clashes with the Kinston Indians. Finally getting back onto the field after two days worth of rain in Woodbridge, the two teams took to the field for a doubleheader at Pfitzner Stadium. The P-Nats did not have enough pitching or hitting to take down the Indians in either tilt, dropping game one 1-0 in the completion of the suspended contest from Memorial Day and game two by the score of 7-5 as a final-inning Nationals rally fell just short.

Game one featured yet another tightly contested affair in the completion of the suspended game from Memorial Day. The game resumed in the top of the second inning with Indians runners on first and second and one out as lefty Tom Milone came on in relief of Monday's starter Brad Meyers. As luck would have it, those inherited runners from the 52-hour delay betweeen at-bats would come back to haunt the P-Nats. The K-Tribe loaded the bases with just the lone out before Matt Willard lofted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Johnny Drennan with an unearned run.

Shockingly, that one run would stand as Milone buckled down, tossing 6 2/3 scoreless frames while striking out two. Brad Meyers (3-1) was saddled with the hard-luck loss, his first of the season, on a day in which he did not throw a pitch since the baserunners Milone inherited reached base against Meyers in Monday's rain-shortened tilt.

Ryan Morris (2-5) had come into the game with an unsightly ERA of 6.50 but he befuddled the Nats' bats for six shutout innings, striking out five while allowing only three hits. Dallas Cawiezell slammed the door in the last two frames to earn his fifth save of the season.

The P-Nats' fortunes would not change in the game two, however, as starter Colton Willems did not make it out of the first inning, allowing the first seven batters to reach before manager Trent Jewett had to make a move to his bullpen. All in all, Willems (1-4) allowed six runs on five hits.

The bullpen followed and put up zeroes for much of the rest of the contest as a quartet of relievers held the Kinston lineup to just one run over the game's final seven innings. Adam Carr, Cole Kimball, Atahualpa Severino, and Dan Leatherman all fired beebees, striking out five without walking a batter to allow the Nats bats to come alive late in the ballgame.

Potomac clawed back to make it 7-5 in the final frame thanks to a two-run error by K-Tribe shortstop Ronald Rivas. The Nats then loaded the bases with two outs before Indians reliever Travis Turek struck out Sean Rooney swinging to end the ballgame.

In six games played between the K-Tribe and P-Nats, the season series is now split at three apiece with the victorious team in all six of those games winning by a combined seven runs.

The P-Nats now hit the road again for another showdown in Lynchburg for three with the Hillcats. Lynchburg took two of three from the P-Nats last week at Pfitzner Stadium. The six game road trip takes the team to Salem as well for another three with the Red Sox.
