Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg defeated Salem 4-2 on Wednesday night at City Stadium. The Hillcats and Red Sox will meet in the finale of the three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, with Lynchburg seeking the series sweep.

The Hillcats seized an early lead in the bottom of the second. Miles Durham led off the frame with a single and promptly swiped second base for his fifth stolen base of the season. Following a strikeout by Kris Watts, Jared Keel drove in Durham with an RBI single to give Lynchburg the early 1-0 advantage.

Durham and Keel sparked the Lynchburg offense again in the fourth. Durham laced a leadoff double and advanced to third base on a groundout by Watts. Keel crushed a two-run home run, his fourth of the season and second in his last two games, off Salem reliever Kyle Fernandes to extend Lynchburg's lead to 3-0.

The Hillcats took advantage of a defensive miscue to tack on an insurance run in the fifth. After Salem reliever Andrew Dobies retired the first two Hillcat hitters in the frame, Pedro Alvarez ripped a double into the left-center field gap. Alvarez scored when Salem third baseman Will Vazquez made an errant throw to first on Matt Hague's slow roller, enabling Hague to reach on the error.

While the Hillcats offense built the 4-0 lead, Lynchburg starter Paul Mildren kept the Red Sox' hitters in check throughout the game. Mildren pitched five scoreless innings before allowing a run in the sixth. Jon Hee ripped a two-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chih-Hsien Chiang delivered an RBI single that scored Hee to cut Lynchburg's lead to 4-1.

Lynchburg reliever Mike Colla worked a scoreless inning in relief of Mildren before giving way to Michael Dubee. After retiring the first two Salem hitters in the eighth, Dubee allowed a single to Kris Negron. Negron advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Hee's RBI double. Dubee tossed a scoreless ninth to seal the 4-2 win.

Mildren (2-4) earned the win for Lynchburg while Colla was credited with his first hold of the season and Dubee picked up his fourth save. Salem starter Dave McKae (1-2) was charged with the loss.

With the win, Lynchburg improved to 29-16 and remains in first place in the Carolina League's Northern Division. Salem fell to 22-24 and held on to first place in the Southern Division with Winston-Salem's loss at Myrtle Beach.
