Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Frederick Keys struck for four runs in the top of the first and went on to shut out Myrtle Beach 6-0 Saturday at TicketReturn.com Field.
The ballgame began with Jay Gonzalez working out a walk before Josh Hart laid down a sacrifice bunt. Pelicans (1-2) catcher Gioskar Amaya unleashed a wild throw down the right field line, allowing Gonzalez to reach third. Steve Wilkerson followed with a successful safety squeeze bunt to make it 1-0 Frederick (2-1).
The next batter was Aderlin Rodriguez, who promptly crushed a two-run home run to left field to open a three-run lead.
But the Keys weren't done. Jomar Reyes hit a liner to deep left-center, causing Pelicans outfielders Shawon Dunston and Rashad Crawford to collide and allow Reyes to reach third. Crawford left the game with an injury. Myrtle Beach starter Trevor Clifton (0-1) then unleashed a wild pitch, allowing Reyes to score and make it 4-0.
In the third, Reyes walked with one out before Cam Kneeland singled him to third. Keys catcher Austin Wynns then flew out to center to drive home Reyes and make it 5-0.
The Keys got it going in the fifth when Rodriguez doubled to deep right-center to start the frame. Two batters later, Kneeland ripped a bouncer down the third base line to plate Rodriguez and make it 5-0.
Frederick pitching did the rest. Starting pitcher Matthew Grimes (1-0) worked five shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing only four Pelicans to reach. The bullpen completed the shutout, striking out five more and only walking one.
The Keys and Pelicans meet at 3:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon to complete their four-game set. Erick Leal (0-0, 0.00) gets the start for Myrtle Beach, while Chipper Smith (0-0, 0.00) will go for Frederick. The first 1,000 fans 12 years and under through the gates, which open at 2 p.m., will receive a Pelicans bat bag. Coverage begins at 2:50 p.m. on www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and the TuneIn app.
The 2016 season is the 18th season for the Pelicans franchise and second as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2016, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
