Frederick Keys News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Frederick Keys used a big inning and outstanding pitching to post a 6-0 shutout against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Saturday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Park. In the game, the quartet of Matthew Grimes, Max Schuh, Ivan Hernandez and Jimmy Yacabonis combined to six-hit the home team. With the win, the Keys move past the .500 mark for the first time this season.
For the second straight night, the Keys were fueled by a four-run inning. On Saturday, the four run frame came in the first. Following a leadoff walk by Jay Gonzalez, Josh Hart bunted and reached on an error by Pelicans catcher Gioskar Amaya. With men at first and third, Steve Wilkerson would bring Hart home via a bunt, before Aderlin Rodriguez hit a titanic homer over the leftfield wall. Frederick's first baseman finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored and came up triple short of the cycle.
Jomar Reyes followed with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch to wrap up the scoring. On the triple, Shawon Dunston Jr. and Rashad Crawford collided, forcing a short delay as Crawford was forced to come out of the game.
Armed with a 4-0 lead, Grimes (1-0) turned in five outstanding innings to earn a win in his Advanced-A debut. During that time he scattered four hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter. He threw 79 pitches, 47 for strikes, while in all four innings he never faced more than one over the minimum.
It was a more challenging day for Grimes' counterpart Trevor Clifton, who allowed five runs (three earned) in just three innings in his first CL game. He walked four and struck out four. Clifton (0-1) threw more than 30 pitches in the first inning alone.
Frederick added single markers in the third and fifth. In the third, Cam Kneeland singled Reyes to third on a hit and run, while Austin Wynns brought his teammate home via a sacrifice fly. Two innings later, Rodriguez and Kneeland doubled to complete Frederick's scoring.
In relief, Schuh, Hernandez and Yacabonis all threw well in their first outings of the season, with the group giving up just two hits in four innings. For the game, Keys pitchers struck out 12 batters, while Pelicans arms collaborated on 13 punch outs.
The Keys and Pelicans conclude their four game series on Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Chipper Smith (0-0, --) makes his Advanced-A debut, while righty Erick Leal (0-0, --) gets the ball for Myrtle. First pitch is slated for 3:05 p.m from TicketReturn.com Field and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. Frederick kicks off its first homestand on Thursday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m and will feature a magnet schedule giveaway presented by Precision Heating and Cooling.
