Pearce, Pen Dominant In Shutout Win Monday

Peoria, IL-The Peoria Chiefs scored an unearned run in the first and made it stand up as they beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 1-0 Monday night. The win improves the Chiefs to 39-24 on the season and 72-59 overall with four games remaining on the home stand.

The Chiefs got on the board first in the first inning against Kernels starter Felix Jorge. Darren Seferina led off and reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Oscar Mercado for the 1-0 Chiefs lead.

The Kernels had their best chance to score in the third against Chiefs starter Matt Pearce. Austin Diemer singled and advanced to second on a passed ball by Steve Bean. He moved to third on a groundout by Nick Gordon and was stranded there when T.J. White grounded out to end the inning. The Kernels did not get another runner past second the rest of the night, and only had two other runners in scoring position on the evening.

Pearce (11-10) was dominant in the win, going six shutout innings, allowing only three hits, striking out four. Steve Sabatino pitched a shutout inning, allowing one hit and one walk, striking out one. Nick Frey worked a scoreless inning, walking one. Kyle Grana earned his 22nd save of the season with a perfect ninth, striking out one.

Notes: Pearce recorded his team-leading 15th quality start of the season in his 23rd outing, he now has a winning record for the first time since April 13 after he won his first start of the season...Grana's 22 saves are second in the Midwest League, trailing only Zac Curtis of Kane County...22 saves tied Grana for sixth on the Chiefs single season list with former Major Leaguer Heathcliff Slocumb in 1989...Grana is also tied for ninth on the Chiefs single season list with 41 games finished...Mercado stole his league-leading 50th base of the season in the first inning, becoming the first Chiefs player to steal 50 bases in a season since Matt Lemanczyk stole 56 in 2003...Mercado also tallied two hits for his 30th multi-hit game of the season...Paul DeJong had his 11-game hit streak snapped...Brian O'Keefe had his 10-game hit streak halted as well...The shutout win is Peoria's 15th of the season, second in the Midwest League behind Quad Cities with 16...The Chiefs last 1-0 win came July 15 against Beloit...The Chiefs and Kernels conclude their series Tuesday night at 7:00 with $1 Field Box Sets and $1 nachos and popcorn as a part of Fan Appreciation Week at Dozer Park...The pitching matchup features Peoria LH Ian McKinney (3-0, 2.03) against Cedar Rapids LH Sam Clay (0-3, 4.70)...The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m., on  www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android...The broadcast is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the MiLB Inside the Park and Tune-In Radio Apps.
